CFA Society Victoria Candidate News

Congratulations to all Level I candidates who passed the December exam.  The June exams are just three months away, so now is the time to really get to work so that you can increase your chance for success in June.  The CFA Victoria Society is offering a couple ways that you can increase your chance for success.

First, we are working to set up study groups for where local candidates can help each other answer questions and share ideas.  If you would like to join a study group, please contact Brent Beagle, the Candidate Services chair for CFA Society Victoria at [email protected].

Second, we are working to set up a mock practice exam in May, which will simulate the actual exam experience and help you see where you are at in the preparation process.  This practice exam will be held on Saturday, May 9th, 16th, or 23rd.  The dates and location will be finalized in the coming weeks.  We will be contacting all students with details as soon as the date for the mock exam is set.

On another important note, there has been a change in the registration process for the CFA Program.  In the past when you registered for the CFA program you had to click a button to say that you didn't want to receive marketing materials from 3rd party providers and local CFA institutes.  Due to changing international laws, you now must click a button to say that you would like to receive this information.  To clarify, by saying you would like to receive marketing materials, you are saying that local CFA societies can email you marketing material, and other 3rd party prep providers can send you marketing material through regular postal mail.  To ensure that you receive this important information please access your account on the CFA Institute website and double check your personal settings.

Best of luck with your exam preparation!

Thanks,

Brent

Happy Retirement!

Charles Volkovskis, CFA retired from his position as Senior Portfolio Manager at bcIMC last month. As one of the founding members of Victoria CFA Society, Charles served in various roles  on the Society's Board of Directors between 1999 and 2005, including  Membership Chair, Vice President, and President. Charles was also the founder and for many years the driving force behind the annual CFA Victoria Golf Tournament, popular with local members and guests from across the globe.

Charles moved to Victoria from Toronto in 1996 when he joined the Office of the Chief Investment Officer, later to become BCIMC. Charles was a friend and mentor to many of us during his career at bcIMC and inspired us with his personal, career and sports accomplishments.

Bryan Thomson, Senior Vice President of Equity Investments at bcIMC shared these words about his long time colleague and friend:

"Charles and I worked together at bcIMC (and its predecessor organization OCIO) for 18 years.  At the beginning of my tenure Charles was one of the senior investment professionals that I hoped to emulate and over the years I was fortunate to become a close colleague and friend.  Charles was one of the key individuals who helped build bcIMC into the organization it is today and he should be justifiably proud of what he helped accomplish. As we at bcIMC now look to the future, the quality of the people, the solid investment program, and the client first focus, were an essential element of Charles's contribution to bcIMC. Congratulations Charles and enjoy your retirement!"

May is Investors First Month

While the idea of putting investors first is simple and straightforward, in practice it can be difficult, and conflicts of interest abound. We recognize these challenges and seek to provide guidance on how to manage them. Clear and objective standards like the CFA Institute Code and Standards provide a foundation, and we are committed to promoting debate and discussion to move the industry forward and address complex matters.

With this work there are two important stakeholders: the financial services professionals that serve customers, and the customers themselves. For both groups we endeavor to provide resources to ensure that the future of finance is bright for everyone.
