Obama Names TFT Alumna as Recipient of Top Teaching Award
From CSUNshinetoday.csun.edu

On Aug. 22, President Barack Obama named one teacher from the state of California as the science recipient for Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching — California State University, Northridge alumna Erica Rood (TFT BA '05).

“I was just overwhelmed,” said Rood M.A. ’15 (Elementary Curriculum and Instruction). “Just overwhelmed. … I was so excited to be receiving an award for something I’m very passionate about. It’s such an important thing to teach kids, and I was really ecstatic to be making news about science.”

Rood, who is also a part-time faculty member in CSUN’s Department of Mathematics, is a third-grade teacher at CHIME Institute’s Schwarzenegger Community School, a charter school in Woodland Hills.

TFT Alumni Nights with The Archive Presents:
A Kirk Douglas Double Feature
The Juggler / Paths of Glory
Tomorow Night! Saturday, August 27th at 7:30PM

This double feature is part of the ongoing program, “TFT Alumni Nights with The Archive.”

Free admission to both films for TFT Alumni who say, “TFT ALUMNI” at the Billy Wilder Theater box office at the Hammer Museum.

The Juggler (1953)

Filmed in newly-established Israel, The Juggler concerns German Jewish concentration camp survivor Hans Müller (Kirk Douglas), once a famous juggler in Germany, who has immigrated to Israel to begin life anew, though facing the hurdle of severe psychological trauma. A rare American feature to treat Jewish experience and the Holocaust so directly, it also offered Douglas the space for a tour-de-force performance of international resonance.

35mm, b/w, 86 min.  DIR: Edward Dmytryk.  SCR: Michael Blankfort.  CAST: Kirk Douglas, Milly Vitale, Paul Stewart, Joey Walsh.

Restored by UCLA Film & Television Archive in cooperation with MGM Studios with funding provided by The Film Foundation and The Hollywood Foreign Press Association

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paths of Glory (1958)

Kirk Douglas gives a powerful performance as an honorable French Army officer who, on orders from his superiors, must lead his men on a doomed mission to wrest control of a German-held hill in WWI France.  A quintessential Douglas role pitting the hero against dire circumstance, the film also represented a fortuitous pairing of Douglas' and director Stanley Kubrick's moral temperaments.

35mm, b/w, 90 min.  DIR: Stanley Kubrick.  SCR: Stanley Kubrick, Calder Willingham.  CAST: Kirk Douglas, Ralph Meeker, Adolphe Menjou, George Macready.

Part of: Kirk Douglas: A Centennial Celebration

Blazing lyrical and emotional force…The spellbinding sound of a great American artist singing the history of his culture from the stage, creating a long, beautiful song out of unfathomable suffering. -- Charles Isherwood, Variety
Ambition and art collide with the business of the blues in this red hot play filled with music that made the '20s roar. An American masterpiece, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is set in 1927 Chicago during a recording session at a white-owned studio with the legendary singer—inspired by real-life Mother of the Blues Gertrude "Ma" Rainey. Tony Award® winner Phylicia Rashad directs this groundbreaking play with a powerhouse cast led by Lillias White (Broadway’s Fela! and Once on This Island), Keith David (OWN’s Greenleaf, Broadway’s Jelly’s Last Jam), and Glynn Turman (HBO’s The Wire, Showtime’s House of Lies) all returning to the Taper from Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.

Extraordinary! Ma Rainey rides on the exultant notes of the blues! -- Newsweek
