To Help Roxbury Hockey Player's Dad: A 1-Day Online Power Play

Rotarian Steve Alford adds a new spin to GoFundMe campaign to help 17-year-old Roxbury High School hockey player and Interact member, Justin Matthews, whose father is battling cancer.

His idea: a 1-day GoFundMe challenge on August 26 on behalf of the family. The challenge: Get as many people to go to the existing GoFundMe page and double the donations already there.

Alford hopes it will become an event, an unusual twist on GoFundMe that generates some community excitement and the extra $5,000 the family needs to survive.

Family in Roxbury Hopes Golfers Will
"Raise the Roof" for Spina Bifida Awareness
Golfers will tee off September 26 at the Berkshire Valley Golf Course in Oak Ridge to raise money for Levi Spencer, a 4-year-old Roxbury native born with spina bifida, a birth defect that paralyzed him from the hips down.

The first annual Golf Scramble is one of a series of fundraisers held as part of "Raising the Roof for Levi," an online fundraiser created by Spencer family supporters, known as Team Levi, that will help finance an estimated $100,000 of handicap-friendly renovations at the Spencers' Succasunna home.

These events are "just for raising awareness about the birth defect spina bifida," which is the family's major goal, said Levi's mom, Jillian Spencer. Her young son's condition is a rare one; less than 200,000 cases occur annually in the U.S.

Participants will golf in groups of four. Each group will kick off the event at one of the course's 18 holes, then rotate once everyone sinks their shots. Families and businesses alike can sponsor a hole, which will feature a sign or plaque with their names. Sponsors can enjoy gold, silver or bronze status, which offer different advertising opportunities depending on the amount donated.

Hip Hop Dance After School

Hip Hop is an eclectic street style of dance that is performed in running shoes to current upbeat tempos. The dynamic moves taught in Hip Hop class are fast, stylish, funky and similar to those seen in music videos.

This class is appropriate for high energy dancers that are driven by a beat. Similar to a Jazz class, Hip Hop is broken down into 3 parts - warm up, corner work/technique and choreography. Students in a Hip Hop class will work on their strength, flexibility, and musicality through intricate fun and fast paced funky choreography.

Since the tempos are usually quicker than any other dance form, the choreography in a Hip Hop class provides a great cardio workout and is also a fun way to exercise the mind and memory.

Time: After-School at the Designated School

Kiddie Soccer

During our seasonal 8-week sessions, your child will participate in a group with approximately a 12:1 child to coach ratio. These groups are typically co-ed and broken into age groups by year.
Our staff of soccer coaches have developed a series of fun, thematic games designed to teach the children the very basics of soccer. Games such as Sleeping Giant, Red Light Green Light, Sharks & Minnows, and Soccer Potato are used to teach the children soccer in a fun-filled, safe and constructive environment.

An eight-week session consists of eight 1-hour classes held on a successive day and time of the week. Each 1-hour class has two or three water breaks for the children (water and snacks should be provided by the parent).

Every participant receives a  Kiddie Soccer  t-shirt at the first class.  At the last class, every child receives a special medal for having participated in the program.  Kiddie Soccer  also offers an optional uniform and starter kit (bag, ball, water bottle and shin guards).
