Panelists and participants in the Summer School in Mexico Discuss the Nonprospects for nuclear disarmament |
CNS and the Mexican Foreign Ministry partnered to hold the third annual Summer School on Nuclear Disarmament and Nonproliferation in Mexico City from July 4-8, 2016.
Summer school participants were predominantly young diplomats from twenty-five Latin American and Caribbean countries and representatives from the Organization for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL). The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the MatÃas Romero Institute, and OPANAL provided support to the program.

Carnegie Spotlight on MIIS, CNS, & GIRS
A recent story published on the website of the
Carnegie Corporation of New York highlights its support for CNS as well as the Graduate Initiative in Russian Studies (GIRS), both housed at the
Middlebury Institute for International Studies at Monterey (MIIS), as prime examples of how training the next generation of US and Russian nonproliferation experts could revamp the relationship between the two countries and build crucial bridges in order to "create valuable pathways for meaningful progress."

Using New Media Tools to Track Radiological Sources in Moldova
CNS partnered with the Moldovan National Agency for Regulation of Nuclear and Radiological Activities (NARNRA) for a unique, first-of-its-kind project to locate and track radiological sources abandoned during the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Using new tools such as social media, internet searches, database software, and network analysis tools, CNS researches identified
twenty-five people with the most connections with former co-workers with access to sensitive radiological materials.

Analyzing Trade Data and Open-Source Information
The Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation and
Project Alpha at King's College London held a workshop on June 27-28 focusing on the analysis of trade data and related open-source information to understand critical supply chains and improve nonproliferation trade-control efforts.
The workshop brought together practitioners working on the development and application of relevant analytical techniques and tools to promote non-proliferation objectives and effectively share information.

WMD Elimination: Save the Date!
The
Nonproliferation Review, CNS's refereed journal, will be hosting an event in our Washington, DC, office,
Monday, September 12, to launch the newest issue: a special, double issue focusing on efforts to eliminate weapons of mass destruction, such as those that took place in Syria, Iraq, South Africa, Libya, and elsewhere, with a view to imparting lessons for future WMD elimination contingencies, such as what may be required in North Korea.
Amb. Rose Gottemoeller, the next NATO deputy secretary general, is the confirmed keynote speaker. Stay tuned for further speaker updates and RSVP information.
