Meow...
August is a great time for me to count my blessings.
I am so lucky to live with a cat loving human.
I have this stylish little microchip so I can be returned if I'm ever silly enough to escape out the door and get lost chasing one of those tasty, sweet-looking song birds.
I find myself taken in a comfortable secure carrier to my veterinarian at least once a year for a complete checkup (whether I need it or not).
Plenty of food and fresh water, a warm, cozy place to sleep, a clean cat box, regular attention from my human and lots of play time to keep my svelte figure in the shape it needs to be; I'm one lucky feline fur ball.
Memo to cat owners:
August has two cat-important days: Check the Chip Day and Take Your Cat to the Vet Day. Microchips tied with your name and address at a registry company reduces the odds of a lost kitty if your feline is an unrepentant and incurable wanderer.
Annual checkups, like those for humans, help identify potential health issues and often can lead to early diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Fascetti receives the Excellence in Feline Research Award for 2016
|

|
Dr. Andrea J. Fascetti, a professor of nutrition at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) School of Veterinary Medicine, has been named recipient of the 2016 Winn Feline Foundation/American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) Research Award.
Dr. Fascetti, who received the award at the 2016 Merial-NIH National Veterinary Scholars Symposium on July 30th, was recognized for her contributions to advancing feline health through her research, which focuses on nutrition and metabolism in companion animals, especially cats.
Fascetti is recognized internationally as a leader in feline nutrition. She is a highly productive researcher and a dedicated ambassador for improving feline health through carefully designed research. Her creative and scholarly activities, along with her ability to bring scientists from basic and clinical sciences together, have had considerable impact on the advancement of veterinary nutrition.

Winn/AVMF Scholarship Recipient

Elizabeth Rosalia (DVM 2017, University of California-Davis) is the recipient of the 2016 Winn/AVMF (American Veterinary Medical Foundation) joint scholarship.
Selection is based on academic achievement, leadership, and dedication to and excellence in the study of feline medicine, health and welfare. 2016 is the eighth year of the collaboration between Winn Feline Foundation and AVMF where an extremely qualified veterinary student has been selected to receive this $2500 scholarship.
After growing up with cats in her household and graduating from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Biology in 2013, Elizabeth volunteered at the Animal Rescue League of Boston as a "Feline Friend". The experience of cleaning cages and feeding cats followed by socializing them for the adoption floor gave her deeper insight into cat behavior. Such insight is important in a shelter setting in determining which cats need more socialization or are ready for adoption.
After moving to California to pursue her DVM degree at the University of California-Davis, Elizabeth continued her volunteer work with animals, especially cats. She has been extensively involved for the past three years with the Sacramento SPCA's Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) program. Elizabeth has extended her outreach to help Mercer Veterinary Clinic for the Homeless coordinate free wellness and spay/neuter services in Sacramento plus other programs that reach parts of California, Arizona and Nicaragua. She is also active in the Orphan Kitten Project at UC-Davis where orphan kittens are bottle fed until they can find a forever home.

Reminder: The New Animal Health Studies Database Is Now Here And Ready to Use!

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has launched the Animal Health Studies Database (AHSD) as a resource for researchers seeking animals to participate in clinical studies and for veterinarians and animal owners seeking options for treatment.
This is an incredibly valuable resource for veterinary medicine and animal lovers. This type of database has been long needed and now it is here.
The only other database for veterinary studies until now was the Veterinary Cancer Trials website which focuses on cancer in cats and dogs.
All fields of veterinary medicine and all species of animals in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain are covered in this new health database.

Important Planned Giving Tip for August
|

Many charitable organizations, such as the Winn Feline Foundation, are happy to accept shares of stock or mutual funds as donations.
If you donate appreciated stock you've held more than 12 months you may be able to deduct the full current value of the stock with NO capital gains taxes due. If you sell the stock yourself and donate the proceeds you may have to pay capital gains tax first.
So donating appreciated stock may mean less in taxes for you and may leave more for donation to Winn. It's a Winn-win situation.

Idiopathic hypercalcemia in cats
Hypercalcemia, or an elevation in blood calcium levels, is typically a sign of another underlying disease process. In cats, idiopathic hypercalcemia (elevated calcium without an identifiable cause) is known to occur. VetVine reports on what's recently been learned about idiopathic hypercalcemia in cats.
