Musical Notes
Ross Wood's final Sunday is this weekend, August 28. As a "Postlude" we will have a gala celebration and farewell on Thursday, September 29, Michaelmas, following the 6:30 pm Solemn Mass. We will also celebrate Associate Organist Pro Tem Jonathan Ortloff at this time. Mark your calendars as we honor Ross's 15 years of remarkable service to the parish!

Attention singers! The regular choir season will begin shortly, and t he Advent is always looking for good avocational singers for our Parish Choir. This ensemble provides music for the 9:00 Sung Mass on a regular basis and for an occasional Choral Evensong service during the academic year. There is a regular Sunday warm-up rehearsal an hour before the Mass, plus three week night full choir rehearsals spread over the academic year. If you wish to join us to sing masterworks of the Renaissance and Anglican traditions, please contact Mark Dwyer or Katelyn Emerson after Mass, or email Mark Dwyer at [email protected] for an informal audition. A love of choral music, a pleasant voice, some music-reading skills and the ability to make a regular commitment are the requirements.

Meal Rota for the Rutledge Family
Baby John Reynolds Rutledge was born to Lea and Adam on August 17 at 4.33 pm, entering the world at a healthy 7 pounds, 6.7 ounces, and 20 inches long! The family is doing well, and our parish is helping them out by providing meals from Aug. 22 - Sept. 6. If you can provide the Rutledges a meal (they live on Myrtle Street on Beacon Hill), go to  https://www.lotsahelpinghands.com/c/625294/ to sign up and select a date on the Advent Meal Rota website. Then contact Adam at 617.838.4675 to schedule a delivery. If it's hard to deliver a meal yourself, consider leaving food for them at the church to be picked up/delivered. Welcome to the world, John!

Christian Education for All Ages
Blessing of the Backpacks - September 11 at 9:00 am Mass. Church School at the Advent kicks off September 11! We start by Commissioning the Church School Teachers as a parish family at the 9 o'clock Mass, which is also the service for the seventh annual Blessing of the Backpacks. Students of all ages-from pre-school to grad school-come forward with their backpacks during the 9 o'clock Mass to be blessed by a priest. Don't worry if you're not old enough for a backpack yet-just bring a lunchbox, a pencil box, something you'll carry to school with you every day. Parents are encouraged to bring their children so they may experience the support of the parish as they begin a new school year. After Mass, register for Church School downstairs in Moseley Hall. Why not join us and invite a family that doesn't yet have a church home? Come out for refreshments, to meet the Church School staff, get a blessing for your backpack, and celebrate as a parish the beginning of another great school year!

Confirmation Classes Begin This Fall:  The Advent offers confirmation classes every year for those who wish to be confirmed or received into the Anglican Communion.  The next Confirmation services will be next spring, but we are planning classes for Wednesday nights beginning in November.  Adults and teens who are interested should email  [email protected]  for more information. All are welcome to attend, even as a refresher course on Christian basics!

This email highlights just a few of the items in this week's announcements. For much more, go to http://www.theadventboston.org/announcements/.

Sunday's Collect
Lord of all power and might, who art the author and giver of all good things:  Graft in our hearts the love of thy Name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.
