Public Act 99-646 (HB 5684) was recently signed into law. This legislation requires that certain payments made to retiring employees be certified in an open meeting by your governing body before the payment can be made.

IMRF does not administer the law and cannot answer any interpretation questions or offer advice.

However, to inform employers, IMRF has added a reference page to its website. Information on the new Payments to Retiring Employees page includes:
  • An outline of the requirements of the law.
  • Information needed for an open meeting.
  • A spreadsheet that will calculate how a payment will affect the employee's pension amount and your employer's cost, based on the information provided. (Note: The spreadsheet does not automatically populate member information.)
  • The full text of the law.
Refer to the new reference page then consult your employer's legal counsel with any questions on how to interpret and comply with the law.
TwoPetitions now accepted for fall Trustee Elections
This fall, IMRF will hold elections for two Board of Trustee positions:
  • Employers will elect one Executive Trustee for a five-year term. The five-year term will run from January 1, 2017, through December 31, 2021.
  • Members will elect one Employee Trustee for a four-year partial term. The four-year term will run from January 1, 2017, through December 31, 2020.
Nominating petitions for both positions are now being accepted in IMRF's Oak Brook and Springfield offices until September 15, 2016. Visit the 2016 Board Elections page of IMRF's website, www.imrf.org, for complete information on nominating procedures, qualifications, sample petitions, and a biographical questionnaire.
ThreeProcedure assistance for IMRF employers
To familiarize an Authorized Agent with his or her duties and assist in implementation of those tasks, IMRF provides a compilation of Procedure Checklists on its website, www.imrf.org.

T he checklists were designed to make an Authorized Agent's duties easier by providing step-by-step written direction through important processes, including:
  • Enrollment
  • Disability
  • Retirement
  • Death
  • Termination of Participation
Additionally, IMRF offers a series of Employer Support videos to help Authorized Agents complete common tasks. Each video provides guided direction through key functions, including:
  • Enrolling Members in IMRF
  • Reporting Wages Using the Import Process
  • Reporting Wages Using the Manual Process
  • Authorizing Web Assistants and Security Administrators
Both resources are available under the "Employer" tab on IMRF's website. To download copies of IMRF's checklists, visit the Procedure Checklists for IMRF Employers page. To view the video series, visit the Employer Support Videos page.
