Highlights of GVR Board of Directors' 
Aug. 23 meeting at West Center    

Below are highlights from the Aug. 23 meeting of the GVR Board of Directors:
 
President's Comments - President Gunton thanked the attorney GVR has retained to provide guidance on the relationship between non-profit corporations. He also commended candidates who stepped forward to volunteer as successor director, and encouraged them to be a candidate on the ballot in 2017 if not selected.  He looks forward to reviewing the architect's 10-year Strategic Master Plan at the September meeting.  (See article below)

CEO's Comments - CEO Blumenthal reported the Board will be considering many important matters that will advance the corporation and its members. He acknowledged and thanked all of the representatives from area nonprofits in attendance to hear the legal presentation on best practices and rules governing nonprofit organizations by Attorney Randal Evans of Evans Law of Phoenix. Nonprofits in attendance included:

GVR FoundationGVR Foundation President Anne Waisman, Vice President Brad Stillahn, and Directors Polly Stidham and Karen West presented a check for $15,787.50 to GVR to repay its start-up loan plus prime rate interest. The Foundation is now debt free after 18 months. (Pictured left to right: Stidham, Waisman, West and Stillahn).  Following the presentation, Attorney Randy Evans of Evans Law gave a presentation about formal affiliations between nonprofit organizations to help guide the relationship between GVR and the GVR Foundation.



New Business

APPOINTED - Successor Director Lance Heise - The Board voted to appoint Lance Heise as successor director to complete the term vacated in July. The term expires in March 2019.  The Nominations & Elections Committee had interviewed several well-qualified candidates, and recommended to the Board that Heise be appointed to fill the unexpired term (See article below).

APPROVED - New Club Proposal GVR Glass Artists - The Board unanimously approved the formation of the GVR Glass Artists Club.  The Board noted that its approval of the club does not guarantee GVR is able to accommodate space or funding needs.  

APPROVED - Reciprocal Club Guest Policy - The Board approved 11-1 (Shipley-abstain) an amendment to the Corporate Policy Manual (CPM) that would allow for reciprocal club guests to attend competitive GVR club functions with terms and conditions. Clubs must contact GVR's Club Liaison prior to their event and apply to participate. Documentation outlining the nature of the competition(s) will be required for each event. 

Non-GVR members or guests are only authorized to use GVR facilities associated with the event, including warm-ups/practice time. League play may occur if there is a reciprocal agreement to play at each other's facilities. Fees for non-GVR members participating shall be waived if there is a reciprocal agreement with such non-GVR members to play at their facilities. Clubs may grant guest privileges, at their discretion, to guests of GVR members and, if authorized by the Board, other non-GVR Members upon payment of a guest fee to GVR. 
 
APPROVED - Pilot Program/Social & Dance Club Guests  - The Board unanimously approved an amendment to the CPM that allows for a pilot program (9/1/2016-5/31/17) for social and dance clubs to have non-GVR members attend their functions for a $4 fee per person paid to GVR and deposited to the GVR General Fund. Clubs eligible under this pilot program are:

Standing Committee Reports
 
Board Affairs - Chairperson Mauser stated the Committee has completed its review of legal counsel's comments regarding inconsistences between GVR's Articles of Incorporation and its Bylaws. Their work continues.
 
Fiscal Affairs - Chairperson Mournian stated the budget planning process is underway and plans are to present the proposed 2017 budget to the Board at its October meeting. She also noted it continues its work to refine the Reserve Policy, and will make suggestions for review by the Planning & Evaluation Committee and then be presented to the Board at a future meeting.
 
Planning & Evaluation - Chairperson Arnold reported his Committee did not meet this month.
 
Nominations & Elections - Chairperson Shipley noted the Committee is considering three electronic balloting firms to refer to staff to assist GVR with its annual election in 2017.
The Committee also will be reviewing language defining committee charges and procedures Corporate Policy Manual and then present it to the Board.
 
Ad Hoc Committee Reports

Investment Committee - Chairperson Lathrop reported the committee met this month and GVR's investments are going very well.

Security Task Force - Chairperson Shipley reviewed the activities of the committee to date.
Meet your new GVR Director!

Lance Heise ( pron. Hi-C, like the drink!) joins the GVR Board of Directors as a successor director to fill an unexpired term.  Lance has been a GVR member since May 2016 and is a full time resident, living in the Casa Primavera neighborhood. 

Retired in 2012, Lance has more than 30 years' experience in human resources, which involved problem-solving, project management and development of policies and procedures to support organizations. He holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science and a master's degree in Telecommunications.  Originally from the State of Washington, Lance served on the Board of Directors and as secretary/treasurer for his condominium complex for eight years.  

Welcome, Lance! We are grateful for your volunteer service on the GVR Board. He is one of the 12 volunteer members who serve as directors on GVR's Board. 
Pima Co. Sheriff's Dept. began patrols of GVR centers this week 

The Pima Co. Sheriff's Department this week began their patrols at all GVR centers as part of their Drive-by Program to provide an increased security presence.  Sheriff's Auxiliary Volunteers (SAV) are completing drive by and foot patrols on and around GVR centers weekly on a random schedule.  If you see Pima Co. Sheriff's Dept. vehicles and uniformed personnel on our premises, thank them!  They are helping to keep GVR  centers  safe and secure. 

Who will get bragging rights?
It's Shearer vs. DeSimone in a pickleball challenge 
10 am tomorrow at East Center courts 

Join us for the pickleball challenge between hometown Newspaper Editor Dan Shearer of the Green Valley News and Chris DeSimone, radio talk show host of Wake Up Tucson on KVOI 1030 AM on your dial.  The challenge takes place at 10 am Friday at East Center courts. Shearer will attempt to defend Green Valley's honor in this challenge game!

GVR Pickleball Club President Jeff Harrell will provide the equipment and instruction prior to play, and will serve as referee.  Harrell will tag team with Pickleball Instructor Carol Hammerle to announce the play-by-play for the game, which is played to 11 points and takes about 30 minutes. 

Come and see who wins the challenge!  Light refreshments served.

Abrego North Center Pool/Spa 
Construction Project Update

Much progress is being made on the new Abrego North Center pool and spa, which will open soon!  The week's progress included completion of the concrete work around the deck and center.  The crew from Shasta Pools also applied plaster to the pool vessel walls this week and filled the vessel with water, major milestones in the construction project. The exterior also is being painted, and 
perimeter  lighting is being installed.  Construction of the expanded parking lot and walkways will be begin shortly.  

GVR is planning a very Grand Re-opening celebration when the Abrego North Center pool and spa project is complete! To view progress of the pool project, check out GVR's live

Pool & Spa Closures 
  • West Center pool/spa deck  was opened several days ahead of schedule on Aug. 24 with the completion of deck repairs. 
  • Santa Rita Springs Center is closed for repairs and painting to the deck and painting of the breezeway, and the installation of new hinged ladders, exercise bars and lane lines. The open date is Sept. 2. Due to there being no access, the Santa Cruz room is closed until the open date.
  • Canoa Hills Center is closed for pool, spa and breezeway deck repairs and painting. The open date is Sept. 3. Two new hinged ladders also are being installed in the first swim lane. The  Mesquite Room will be closed during this project.
  • South Abrego Center's spa will be closed on Aug. 30 and Desert Hills Center's spa will close Sept. 1 for routine cleaning and maintenance.
Cool pool tool

 

If you've ever grabbed a metal pool handrail during the intense heat of an Arizona summer day -- ouch! You know how hot those rails can get from the intense rays!  To protect your hands against the heat, GVR is installing Kool Grip covers on handrails and pool ladders at several of our pool locations. 


East Center Partial Closure for Floor Cleaning
The interior rooms, classrooms and club spaces at East Social Center will be closed beginning Aug. 29 for floor care and carpet deep cleanings. All areas are scheduled to open Sept. 3. The customer service office and locker rooms will remain open during this period.  
CLASSES & TOURS
Worth the wait

Many of you have been asking: When's the GVR Fall Course Catalog coming out. You only need wait a few more days.  It will be in all GVR centers and online on Monday, Aug. 29.  It's chock-full of interesting classes this semester. Take some time to peruse the 188 class titles offered, 26 of which are new. 

Registration begins Sept. 6 and classes fill up fast. Register for classes by visiting any of our staffed centers or save yourself the trip and register online at www.gvrec.org.

We have also partnered with a second tour company, Southern Arizona Guide Tours, in addition to our long-term partners Pleasurebent Tours, to bring you double the number of exciting tours, from ghost towns and wineries to our first overnight trip!  Don't miss out on all of our exciting adventures. Help Wanted: Pool Technician
 
GVR has an immediate opening for a part time Pool Technician. Minimum qualifications: High school diploma/GED; possess or willing to obtain pool certification  from Pima County Health Department; one (1)  year previous experience; ability to speak and understand English well; ability to lift 75 lbs. Pay range is $12-20.63 commensurate with experience.  

To apply, fill out an online application or visit the Member Services Center, 1070 S. Calle de las Casitas (behind the Continental Shopping Plaza).  The  Member Services Center is open from 8 am- 4 pm weekdays. 
GVR CLUBS & ACTIVITES
GVR Amigas Club hosts 'Meet and Greet' Sept. 1

 
All GVR women are invited to attend the GVR Amigas Club Meet and Greet from 4-5:30 pm, Thursday, Sept. 1 at Las Campanas Center's Juniper Room. Please bring your favorite adult beverage or soft drink. We will provide the snacks. GVR Billiards Club has Eight Ball scramble in September

The GVR Billiards Club invites all GVR members to participate in its eight ball scrambles at the West Center in September:
  • Sept. 6   "1-15" scramble 
  • Sept. 13  Straight eight 
  • Sept. 20  "1-15" 
  • Sept. 27  Straight eight 
Practice begins at 5 pm followed by competition at 5:30 pm. Each player participates  in 10 games and play is finished by 8:30 pm. Improve your skill and make new friends.  The club has also established ladder tournaments  in the games of "snooker" and "one pocket." Play will begin on Oct 1. and end April 1.

Become a GVR Arts & Entertainment Volunteer

GVR Arts & Entertainment offers program volunteer training for members who are interested in helping support and promote the arts at GVR!  This training is required for all existing and new program volunteers.  Training sessions are scheduled every month throughout the season.  Check GVR Now! for scheduled dates/times. The next training is offered at 10 am October 15 at West Center Auditorium.  No experience necessary, just a willingness to learn and help ensure our guests have a great experience when attending performances and events.  Registration is not necessary!
