This Week in History
August 11, 1974 - Jackie Oliver wins his fourth straight Can-Am race with Don Nichols' Shadow DN4-Chevrolet, this time at Mid-Ohio, to sew up the final Can-Am championship. Oliver prevails from an incredible battle with both his Shadow teammate George Follmer and Brian Redman, in last year's dominant Penske Porsche 917/30, which was entered despite the SCCA's fuel restrictions on turbocars. Follmer gets punted off by his teammate, leaving Redman to finish 2nd as Hurley Haywood takes 3rd with the Brumos Porsche 917/10K.
August 14, 1977 - Alan Jones records his initial Grand Prix victory as well as the first and only F1 triumph for Don Nichols' Shadow Cars, winning the Austrian GP after starting 14th with his Shadow DN8-Cosworth. It remains the last F1 win for an American team. Finishing 20 seconds behind in 2nd place is Niki Lauda's Ferrari, with Hans Stuck Jr.'s Brabham BT45-Alfa Romeo taking 3rd.
August 17, 1975 - Although only half points are awarded because the race is stopped early by torrential rainfall, Vittorio Brambilla scores his first and only F1 victory, guiding his Beta Tools March 751-Cosworth through the downpour to take the premature checkered flag as the race is stopped after but 29 of the scheduled 54 laps. The Italian then celebrates his triumph by spinning in the atrocious conditions and knocking the nosecone off his car. James Hunt takes 2nd with his Hesketh 308-Cosworth, while coming home 3rd is Tom Pryce and the UOP Shadow DN5-Cosworth.
