Dear Reader,

You're invited to the launch of a new children's book by the amazing Elisa Kleven this Sunday 8-21 at noon. The Horribly Hungry Gingerbread Boy; A San Francisco Story is packed full of San Francisco landmarks and  gingerbread boy who runs amok! We'll have gingerbread cookies and fun activities too so bring the kids for a fun event.

The third Thursday of each month there will be music and vendors and a good time to be had on Latham Square now that it's finished. From 5-8 wander on down there and visit us beforehand!

There are two historical walks happening on Saturday for you to know about. At 10 "Jack London's Waterfront" sponsored by the Oakland Tours Program. It begins by the Jack London Square entry arch at the foot of Broadway.
At 1 "Jack London's Oakland is sponsored by the Oakland Heritage Alliance and donations are accepted. It starts in front of Jack's Alaska cabin near Heinold's. Reservations suggested at 510-238-3234 or [email protected].

Of course there are more author events coming up and great books to read so check us out!

And check out the website where we have a link to a list of books that are needed by Oakland Unified Schools. There is a scarcity of librarians in our schools, and that can mean that fewer people are making sure current, popular books are in school libraries. While the store can't make sure there's a credentialed, devoted librarian in each school (oh that I could!) we can ask you to donate one or more. We'll make sure they get to the Managing Librarian who will distribute them. And if you want to donate school supplies, we'll take those too and get them to where they need to go. Thank you.

Happy reading!
Luan

Altamont; the Rolling Stones, the Hells Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock's Darkest Day by Joel Selvin $27.99
Altamont explores rocks darkest day, a fiasco that began well before the climactic death of Meredith Hunter and continued beyond that infamous December night. Joel Selvin probes every aspect of the showfrom the Stones hastily planned tour preceding the concert to the bad acid that swept through the audience to other deaths that also occurred that eveningto capture the full scope of the tragedy and its aftermath. He also provides an in-depth look at the Grateful Deads role in the events leading to Altamont, examining the bands behind-the-scenes presence in both arranging the show and hiring the Hells Angels as security.

The Book by Keith Houston $29.95
Okay, I may be a bit obsessed. This is a fascinating history of the book. It will make a great gift for any writer, reader or book geek.

Everybody who has ever read a book will benefit from the way Keith Houston explores the most powerful object of our time. And everybody who has read it will agree that reports of the book s death have been greatly exaggerated.

The Race for Paris by Meg Waite Clayton $15.99
Inspired by the extraordinary female journalists who were among the first to report the Allied liberation of Paris from the Nazis in 1944, The Race for Paris follows two war correspondents on their quest to document (and make) history. Jane is a young, single reporter who meets photographer Olivia, Liv, on assignment at a field hospital. Unlike their male colleagues, Liv and Jane are constantly confronted by red tape and derision. Jane is resigned to making the most of her assignment, but Liv is determined to chase a bigger story. After failing to win over her commanding officer, she goes AWOL to Paris and Jane, seizing the chance to make a name for herself, joins her.
Reluctantly accompanied by a male British military reporter, the two women scramble through the gunfire and carnage scarring the French countryside. Their journey is further complicated by emotional bonds, romantic tensions, and one woman s secret a secret with the power to end her career and, perhaps, her life.

The Scribe by Matthew Guinn $15.95  After leaving Atlanta in disgrace three years before, detective Thomas Canby is called back to the city on the eve of Atlanta's 1881 International Cotton Exposition to partner with Atlanta's first African American police officer, Cyrus Underwood. The case they're assigned is chilling: a serial murderer who seems to be violently targeting Atlanta's wealthiest black entrepreneurs. The killer's method is both strange and unusually gruesome.
For the mysterious minded among you.

The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.
In the opening pages of Jamie Ford's stunning debut novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.
This simple act takes old Henry Lee back to the 1940s, at the height of the war, when young Henry's world is a jumble of confusion and excitement, and to his father, who is obsessed with the war in China and having Henry grow up American. While scholarshipping at the exclusive Rainier Elementary, where the white kids ignore him, Henry meets Keiko Okabe, a young Japanese American student. Amid the chaos of blackouts, curfews, and FBI raids, Henry and Keiko forge a bond of friendship and innocent love that transcends the long-standing prejudices of their Old World ancestors. And after Keiko and her family are swept up in the evacuations to the internment camps, she and Henry are left only with the hope that the war will end, and that their promise to each other will be kept.
