faith forming faith
There is an ancient process for making disciples.  It is called the catechumenate.  It is a journey experienced in a small group over several months, in which participants share their stories in the light of God's story.  It is a time of inquiry and exploration.  Questions are always welcome.  The journey begins at Nativity with supper on Wednesday October 5.

This week Pastor Gregg and Pastor Rachel will experience this journey over three days as they join others in Tucson, Arizona for an immersion weekend.  Pastor Mark and Dana will do likewise in September with members and neighbors of a parish in Manhattan.  This will prepare these four to lead the journey at Nativity with adults (Pr Mark & Dana), youth (Pr. Rachel) and the whole worshipping community (Pr. Gregg).

Nativity is blessed to have received a Michael Peeler Grant from the North Carolina Synod to underwrite the cost of this new venture.  It provides for leader training and resources for implementing this approach in our parish 2016-2017.  The grant also provides funding to host a training event here at Nativity in May for other congregations to experience.
Adult Learning at Nativity

It's that time of year when opportunities for Adult Learning begin again.  In order of starting dates they are:

Adult Bible Study (Lectio Divina)
Time:  Wednesday Mornings, 10:00-11:30, beginning August 31
Place: Modular
Leader:  Pastor
This small group gathers weekly to explore prayerfully next Sunday's lesson.  Sharing, teaching and Q&A are lead by the pastor assigned to preach that week.  Past participants have found that this preparation deepens the Sunday morning experience of the Word.

Wondering Women
Time:  Monday Evenings, 6:30-8:00, beginning September 12
Place:  North Classroom, Fellowship Hall
Leader:  Nancy Seekamp
This women's small group will begin their studies with the book, "The Pursuit of Holiness" by Jerry Bridges.  One summary of this book states: "What does holiness look like? For starters, it doesn't look anything like perfection. And it doesn't necessarily look like victory. Mostly, it consists of effort, prayer, grace, and obedience."

Book Discussion Group
Time:  Monthly, beginning Tuesday September 13, 1:30-3:00 for afternoon group;  beginning Thursday 6:30-8:00 for evening group
Place:  North Classroom, Fellowship Hall
Leaders:  Linda Blake, Corinne Feid, Peggy Oehm
This small group will read a book per month in preparation for discussion during their time together.   September's book is "A Skeleton in God's Closet" by Paul L. Maier.  "Carefully researched and compellingly written, this fast-paced thriller takes you from the dust of the archaeological dig to the labs of dedicated scientist to the halls of political and religious power, where world reaction is instant, fierce, and shattering..."

The Way (Adult Cathechism)
Time:  Every other Wednesday Evening, 6:00, beginning October 5
Leaders: Pastor Mark & Dana Fitzsimmons
See the lead article, "Faith Forming Faith" for more information.

Men's Morning Bible Study
Time: Thursday mornings, 8:00-10:00, already happening, year-round
Place:  IHOP, Airport Road (backroom)
Communicator:  Bob Reuter
There is no assigned teacher for this group which has met for over two decades on a weekly basis. The first hour is devoted to group reading of a few chapters from scripture.  Discussion and sharing determine how much is covered each time.  The format is very open and insightful.  The second hour is breakfast.  Participants have found this combination of learning and fellowship to be an important support to their faith journey. A summary email from Bob each week highlights the prayer concerns of group members.  Currently, MMBS is reading the Gospel of John.

+ Gulf Coast Outreach

The ELCA Disaster Response has been diligently working to provide relief for those who have been forced from their homes due to the flooding in the Gulf Coast region. To learn more about their efforts, and to discover ways you can help aid their work, click here

We remember and pray for those who have had their lives impacted by this dramatic flooding. Some of our own are from this area, including Melanie and Alfred Berlin. Contact the Berlin family here for more information about the flooding and to discuss how Nativity folks who want to help might proceed.
