AskBarbara:
Setting a Good Example When Those in the Public Eye Aren't
AskBarbara
Hi AskBarbara,

Elections are always difficult to explain to children, but I feel that this year's election is especially difficult in this area. How do I reconcile the message we teach our children of setting a positive example and not being a bully with what they are seeing in the news every day?

Judy Halper,
JFCS CEO

U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia recently said the most powerful non-violent tool at our disposal is the right to vote. JFCS staff member Clare Gravon is helping to ensure a good voter turnout come November.

Clare spends her time assisting older adults who qualify for SNAP benefits. To ameliorate food insecurity for older adults, and to make sure they have access to healthy and nutritious food, Clare provides education about all the ways seniors can stretch their monthly budgets in order to eat healthy and stay healthy so they can age well.

JFCS Academic Scholarships provide new opportunities
2016 BOND Group Allocation
Thanks to our generous donors, JFCS is proud to be able to provide college scholarships each year to
both those in need of financial assistance and applicants that demonstrate significant merit.

This year we awarded over $70,000 to over 35 applicants - some are entering their freshman year and others are returning to school in hope of changing careers. We're fortunate to have many donors support our effort to help people attend a post-secondary institution; the BOND (Branching Out in New Directions) group has demonstrated its commitment by allocating $13,500 of money it has raised to support our applicants. Thank you!

When you support GIVE2016, your contrib u tion helps sustain these scholarship opportunities and other crucial programs and services that strengthen our community. Please consider making your gift today.

A huge thanks to Max Orenstein, Todd Sandler and some very good natured staff and JFCS friends!
Each year, JFCS serves thousands of people in our community, our neighborhoods and our families. The Annual Laugh on Their Behalf Benefit is a special evening of fun, food and comedy to support the work we do.

This year, we're spreading the word about the event with some fun, short videos to get you and your friends excited. Watch for them on Facebook and in upcoming emails; share them and help make them an internet sensation!

The JFCS 28th Annual Laugh on Their Behalf Benefit with comedian Gary Gulman is Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Minneapolis Hilton. Tickets and info here.

For a Career Services client, practice makes perfect

We've all heard the saying, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." The story of Annie, a JFCS Career Services client, definitely proves that to be true.

Annie was out of a job when she first came to JFCS and wanted to find work quickly to support herself and her family. While she looked for a job, Annie took a temporary position just to pay the bills. She described herself as a "mature" jobseeker. Read Annie's determined story here.

It's election year - are you registered to vote?
With Gratitude

Andy Stillman, JFCS Board Member, recently asked his friends to make donations
to PRISM's Marketplace Food Shelf in lieu of gifts for his recent birthday. 476 pounds of food and nearly $800 were donated as a result! What an inspiring idea! Do you have a creative way to support PRISM?
