6 Forklift Fouls and How to Avoid Them
- Not knowing your forklift's load capacity: Carrying a load that is too heavy will make the vehicle unstable. Be aware of the vehicle's capacity.
- Not being aware of your route: If you're moving through a workplace that has a complex layout or a particularly dynamic environment, make sure you're familiar with any obstacles that may cause problems.
- Operating with an unsecured load: Depending on the items you're carrying, you might have more difficulty than usual securing the load. Take extra care of objects that are prone to toppling or affecting maneuverability.
- No communication with surrounding workers: Letting people know what you're doing and where you're going can help them be mindful of your operations.
- Inadequate battery and hydraulic fluid levels: Without an adequately charged battery or appropriate levels of hydraulic fluid can prevent you from getting the job done safely. Make sure vehicles have been inspected regularly.
- Misuse of the vehicle: Forklifts can be very dangerous if not operated with care. Don't speed or use the vehicle for anything other than their specified purpose.

Two Critical Problems With OSHA's New Injury Reporting Rule
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) revision to the Recording and Reporting Occupational Injuries and Illnesses regulation requires employers in specific industries to electronically submit all OSHA-required data that will be displayed for public scrutiny. OSHA believes that in making the injury information public, identifying the companies at the highest risk of occupational injuries and illnesses will be easier.
Issue 1: The metrics OSHA has chosen to make public are inadequate to inform safety policy. Michael Belcher, past president of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), has spoken out against OSHA's final rule and claimed that it is a "step backward for safety professionals." Belcher argues that by making specific workplace injury and illness data public, OSHA is encouraging the use of ineffective, lagging indicators as key performance metrics, which many companies will use to benchmark their own safety performance.
Issue 2: OSHA's final rule requires electronic submission, yet most companies are not technologically equipped to do so. The second problem with the OSHA ruling is that according to a recent EHS Daily Advisor report, 79 percent of companies currently report on safety performance without the use of safety software. Brake Safety Week Inspection to be Held in September
Sept. 11-17 is the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's (CVSA) Brake Safety Week, during which law enforcement will conduct inspections on commercial vehicles to look for out-of-adjustment brakes, as well as any brake system and anti-lock braking system (ABS) violations. CVSA inspectors will look for "loose or missing parts, air or hydraulic fluid leaks, worn linings, pads, drums or rotors and other faulty brake system components." Inspectors will check ABS malfunction indicator lights to make sure they are in working order and defective or out-of-adjustment brakes will result in the vehicle being placed out-of-service. Inspections will be full Level I inspections and 10 jurisdictions will be using performance-based brake testing to measure braking efficiency. During 2015's inspection spree, inspectors conducted 18,817 inspections and placed 2,321 of those trucks out-of-service.
