Choose Zero this School Year
Now that the new school year has begun, our streets and roadways are much busier, placing children and motorists at higher risk for transportation-related incidents.
Motor vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death among young children in the United States. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), from 2004 to 2013, 327 school-age children (18 or under) died in school-transportation-related crashes. In addition, more school-age pedestrians were killed between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. and between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. than any other hours of the day. In Fort Lauderdale, four children have been killed in traffic crashes since 2013.
The City adopted Vision Zero Fort Lauderdale to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets to zero. Whether walking, biking, bussing, or driving, we are all responsible for the choices we make when traveling on City streets. As students head back to school, let's start the year off by choosing to put safety first and respectfully sharing our streets. By doing so, you'll help make our streets safer for everyone, including our children. Remember, your choices add up to zero; your choices save lives.

Back to School Safety Tips
Bus Safety
- Motorists are required to stop when approaching a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing and STOP arms extended.
- The only time traffic approaching an oncoming school bus does not need to stop, is if there is a raised barrier such as a concrete divider or at least five feet of unpaved space separating the lanes of traffic.
- Motorists should be alert and watch for children especially near schools, bus stops, school buses, and in school parking lots.
- At bus stops, children should wait in a safe place away from the road.
- Children should never walk behind a bus.
- Remember, Stop on Red, kids ahead!
While Driving
- Slow down and be especially alert in the residential neighborhoods and school zones
- Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs
- Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully
- Watch for children on and near the road in the morning and after school hours
- Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
- Put down your phone and don't talk or text while driving.
Reminder for your kids
- They should cross the street with an adult until they are at least 10 years old
- Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks
- Never run out into the streets or cross in between parked cars
- Make sure they always walk in front of the bus where the driver can see them

Commissioner Roberts Telephone Town Hall August 30
District I Commissioner Bruce G. Roberts will host the next citywide Telephone Town Hall Meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 30, 2016. It's your chance to share your thoughts with the Commissioner regarding City services, initiatives and events.

Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Collection Event set for September 10
Fort Lauderdale residents are invited to participate in the City of Coconut Creek's next household hazardous waste and electronics recycling collection event on September 10. The event will be from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and is free to all Fort Lauderdale residents. The event will be held at 4181 NW 121 Avenue, Coconut Creek, Florida 33065.

Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk set for Saturday, September 10th
Thousands of people are expected to participate in the Annual Tunnel to Towers Fort Lauderdale 5K Run &Walk on Saturday, September 10th starting at 7:30 a.m. at Huizenga Park, 32 East Las Olas Boulevard.
The event honors both first responders who lost their lives on 9/11 and U.S. Military personnel who were catastrophically injured as a result of their service. All proceeds will benefit the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, including the Building for America's Bravest program, which builds specially adapted, custom designed smart homes for our nation's most catastrophically injured service members.

King Tides Expected Sept. 16 - 21
Flooding in low-lying areas is more likely in the fall months, as the close proximity of the moon, high tides, rising sea levels, and inclement weather conditions combine to exacerbate flooding risks.
As a coastal community with numerous low-lying areas and 300 miles of canal coastline, Fort Lauderdale neighbors are advised to be especially vigilant from September through December, when tides are expected to be at their highest levels for the year.
While the City maintains an extensive stormwater master plan and is instituting both aggressive maintenance and innovative adaptation solutions to address drainage, including the installation of tidal valves, the location and natural geography of the City makes neighborhoods susceptible to flooding. Remember that flooded streets may be covered in either fresh or saltwater. Please take caution whenever driving on flooded streets. When in doubt, turn around.

Report Unlicensed Contractor Activity
Unlicensed contracting activity is a crime that negatively
affects the health, safety, and welfare of our community.
The City of Fort Lauderdale encourages neighbors to report
unlicensed contractor activity. Send an email to
[email protected] or call 954-828-6500.
Here are some tips for working with contractors:
* Ask to see the contractor's license, which should list the
contractors name, license number, address, and specialty
* Ask for written estimates from several licensed contractors
* Read contracts carefully and ask questions
* Ask for references
* Make sure the entire scope of work for the job is clearly
detailed in the contract
* Get all change orders to the original scope of work in writing and signed by both parties.
