Two New Communities Set to Open
Two new Gardant-managed assisted living communities are set to open this fall.

Gateway at River City is an affordable assisted living community designed to serve adults 22 to 64 years of age with physical disabilities. The community is being developed in Peoria, Illinois. Gardant operates a similar community - Deer Path of Huntley - in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.
Lacey Creek is an affordable assisted living community for older adults. The community is being developed in Downers Grove, Illinois.
Both communities will operate through the Illinois Supportive Living Program.

Helping an Older Adult Age with Compassion and Dignity
In a blog posted on the U.S. News & World Report MONEY website, contributor Maryalene LaPonsie highlights five steps you can take to help an older adult who is slowing down to age with compassion and dignity.

Serving Middle Income Older Adults
Rick Banas, of Gardant, will be speaking at a Plante Moran Living Forward session on "Serving the Middle Income Senior Housing Market" at the LeadingAge Illinois 2016 Senior Living Conference, scheduled for September 27 and 28 at the Hilton in Lisle, Illinois.

Living Longer, Happier and Healthier
Blog
Research appears to indicate that a strong sense of purpose, movement and social connectivity are the three most important factors to living longer, healthier and happier lives.

Bowman Deficiency Free
Bowman Estates of Danville, the affordable assisted living community that Gardant manages in Vermillion County, Illinois, has received a deficiency-free survey from the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services.

1st Signs of Alzheimer's
Persistent changes in an older adult's behavior may be the first signal of Alzheimer's disease, notes a HealthDay report posted on the Medline Plus website. Social withdrawal, angry outbursts, anxiety and obsessiveness were among the behavioral red flags mentioned.

Hanging Up Can Be Shrewd
Older adults are a frequent target of a wide range of financial scams and healthcare fraud. Recently, Illinois State Rep. Joe Sosnowski and a representative from the Illinois Attorney General's Office held an informational program at our Heritage Woods of Belvidere and Heritage Woods of Rockford affordable assisted living communities on steps older adults can take to protect themselves.

One of the best ways you can protect yourself from telephone scams is also the easiest. Just Hang Up. We want you to know that it is shrewd, not rude, to hang up the phone when a stranger asks for money or personal information, said the representative from the Attorney General's Office.

More information about common scams and how to protect yourself is available on the Attorney General Office's website.

Heritage Woods of Centralia Balloon Flights
August brings Balloon Fest to Centralia, Illinois. For several years, Heritage Woods of Centralia has arranged for some balloon rides prior to the start of the event. This allows residents, who would otherwise be unable to attend the event, the ability to watch balloons take flight from the comfort of their home.

Shingles Protection
Shingles is a painful rash that is most common among individuals 60 to 80 years of age. According to the National Institute of Health, one out of three individuals 60 and older will get shingles. The NIH suggests that if you are 60 or older that you should talk to your doctor about getting a one-time dose of the shingles vaccine to reduce your risk of developing shingles.

Seniors and the Summer Heat
While the summer season is winding down, we still may experience periods of high heat and humidity. If a senior needs a place to cool down during a heat emergency, visit any of the communities that Gardant manages. Are You Nearing 65?
If you or a loved one will soon be turning 65, the National Institute of Health encourages you to visit its website for an overview about the basics of Medicare.

Information is available about how to enroll and the 4 Parts of the Medicare program: Part A - Hospital Insurance; Part B - Medical Insurance; Part C - Medicare Advantage Plans; and Part D - Prescription Drug Coverage.
