BREEAM Green Building Program Comes to the US

Green building is nothing new in the U.K. as evidenced by the history of the BREEAM green building rating program. BREEAM was developed long before LEED, but until now has not been used in the United States. As the article below reports, an existing building in California is seeking certification as the first BREEAM building in the U.S. How widely this new-to-the-U.S. rating system will be used remains to be seen.

To spur innovation and reward project teams for going above and beyond requirements, in addition to the 100 points of LEED, teams can earn up to six bonus points for innovation. However, oftentimes teams overlook these opportunities, leaving valuable points unclaimed.

UK Sustainability Rating System Makes Way to US

Companies seeking innovative ways to implement sustainable design have a new way to measure sustainable construction -- the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology, or BREEAM, certification, which is similar to LEED and has been used in the UK for the last 25 years. A Los Angeles project could be the first in the US to be BREEAM-certified. Read more.

Market for Green Building Materials to Double by 2020

Zion Research says the market for green building materials will reach $255 billion by 2020, about twice what it was in 2014. North America and Europe are the top consumers of environmentally friendly materials according to this article.
 
Masonry Awards Program Recognizes Sustainable and Resilient Design
