KCCD Hosts Historic Interfaith Prayer Forum as Part of the API Presidential Election Forum
in Las Vegas!
Las Vegas, NVKorean Churches for Community Development (KCCD) hosted a historic API Interfaith Prayer Forum at the 2016 Presidential Election Forum for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) on Friday, August 12, 2016.
For the first time, faith leaders from Christian , Muslim , and Sikh communities spoke and prayed as part of the largest, national gathering of AAPI community leaders who came to meet presidential candidates. Their spiritual and moral presence at this Forum made a significant mark, as Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA) recognized their participation and role in the public square, while speaking during the Presidential Election Forum.

Hyepin Im , KCCD President and CEO, noted that the Presidential Election Forum organizers invited faith leaders because the conveners recognized the importance of the participation of religious institutions. "Churches, temples, and mosques have large networks of AAPIs whose issues need to be addressed and whose concerns need to be heard by our elected officials. We were pleased to lay the foundation for greater participation and connection between the API faith community and other community leaders in the public sphere as well as contribute our voice, presence and leadership to this important historic gathering."

Dr. Russell Jeung Professor of Asian American Studies at  San Francisco State University  and one of the Interfaith Prayer Forum's organizers also shared that faith leaders also have much to contribute to this country and to the communities. "Faith leaders have the moral voice and spiritual insight to speak truth to power.  Historically, Asian American churches were major institutional spaces for transnational, nationalist movements. Today, they continue to be prophetic about community needs, whether racial division, human trafficking, or poverty."

Margaret Yu, Executive Director of EPIC Movement of CRU (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ) spoke of the importance of religious leaders getting involved in the work of the broader community and reaching out to others. She highlighted the story of the Good Samaritan where religious leaders were too busy with their religious work to respond to someone who was hurting in front of them and perhaps because the Samaritan was someone who was the "other."

Overall, the faith leaders spoke on the theme of bringing love and light and moral leadership through service to our country and gave examples from their faith tradition as well as praying for this year's election, those who are voiceless including refugees, immigrants, trafficking victims, and impoverished, as well as for this county and our country's leadership.
