Legislative Session and Capitol Hill Visits - Make Your Voice Heard!

A legislative conference is scheduled for September 7 and 8. To participate in this conference, you must to be in Washington on Tuesday, September 6 in order to attend the 5 pm preparation session. We will have Capitol Hill visits and speeches, etc., on Wednesday morning and afternoon (Sept. 7). We will be preparing you for the presentation on Tuesday evening at 5:00 pm. We will be attending Capitol Hill with speeches in the morning of Wednesday and Capitol Hill visits with individual members of the Congress on Wednesday afternoon. Some appointments may continue through Thursday. If you would like to leave on Wednesday, please do not plan on leaving before 6 pm. If you want to stay, that would be wonderful as visits will continue on Thursday for those who are available to stay.

Each member is expected to visit two senators and one member of Congress for a total of three visits.

ASIPP will book and pay for your room at the Phoenix Park Hotel in Washington, DC. You will be responsible for your own travel expenses.

It is crucial that we have as many people as possible in attendance for this legislative conference. Please block your schedule as soon as possible so that you can attend.

While many of the members and committees are important, we are specifically focusing on the following senators and members. Click here for the list.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you will be attending so that we can begin making the appointments. Contact Melinda Martin at mmartin@asipp.org to RSVP

abippABIPP Certification Made Simple

The American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians (ABIPP) has developed certification programs that recognize accepted levels of knowledge and expertise in the interventional pain management profession, with the goal of improved patient care. Hundreds of qualified physicians have made the commitment to become ABIPP certified. ABIPP is recognized in 11 states. Ten states have no statutes governing specialty boards. Approval is pending in remaining states.

ABIPP is a Specialty Board providing certifications in the following areas:
Board Certification in Interventional Pain Management
Either with ABMS pain medicine board certification or  ABMS primary certification only

Competency Certification in:
* Interventional Pain Management
Regenerative Medicine
Controlled Substance Management
Coding, Compliance, and Practice Management
Fluoroscopic Interpretation and Radiological Safety
Endoscopic Spinal Decompression

beyondBeyond 'Obamacare': State initiatives refocus health debate

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Moving beyond "Obamacare," political activists are looking to state ballot questions to refocus the nation's long-running debate over government's role in health care.

This fall, California voters will decide whether to lower some prescription drug prices, while Coloradans will vote on a state version of a "single-payer" government-run health system, similar to what Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders proposed in his unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

aetnaAetna to Drop Some Affordable Care Act Markets

Aetna Inc.AET-0.34%will withdraw from 11 of the 15 states where it currently offers plans through the Affordable Care Act exchanges, becoming the latest of the major national health insurers to pull back sharply from the law's signature marketplaces after steep financial losses.

Aetna's move will sharpen concerns about competitive options in the exchanges-and it puts at least one county, Pinal in Arizona, at risk of having no insurers offering exchange plans in 2017, a circumstance that would present a major challenge to the basic mechanics of the ACA.

The law mandates that most people acquire health coverage, and offers subsidies to help lower-income consumers purchase plans. To obtain the subsidies, though, people are supposed to purchase their plans through ACA exchanges.

bigBig ICD-10 Challenges Ahead

When medical professionals made the switch to the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10) last October, the conversion was monumental.

Many industry stakeholders argued that the ICD-9 code set had become outdated, and the introduction of ICD-10 would offer health care providers more and better data, which would, in turn, lead to higher-quality patient outcomes.
Moving from ICD-9's 14,025 numeric codes to ICD-10's 69,823 alphanumeric codes, however, proved more of a jump than a gentle transition. And given that CMS is planning to add another 5,500 codes to the ICD-10 diagnostic library this year, it's no wonder some have likened becoming fluent with ICD-10 to learning a whole new language.

overworkPhysician Workload and Communication Survey Shows Physicians are Overworked and Want More Time with Patients

Physicians' lives are out of balance, according to a recent study bylocumstory.com.

To better understand how physicians feel about their jobs, including their workload and communication with patients,locumstory.com surveyed nearly 1,000 physicians across multiple specialties and practice types, including private practice, hospital-based practice, group practice and others (health maintenance organization [HMO], locum tenens, etc.).

The survey found that due to the growing amount of paperwork, physicians are spending more time at work, but less time with patients. In addition to working longer hours, physicians are also taking secondary jobs to supplement their incomes.

exerciseExercise-Induced Hypoalgesia for Neuropathic Pain

Designing of effective treatments for neuropathic pain (NPP) has been hampered by the diversity of mechanisms and sites involved. 1   Randomized controlled trials have shown that only half of patients achieve pain relief with medication, most of whom still experience moderate-to-severe pain. In addition, NPP treatments are associated with adverse side effects which render treatments intolerable. 2

A significant body of research using animal models of neuropathic pain suggests that exercise holds promise for the treatment of NPP. 3-5   A review recently published in Anatomical Science International, sought to clarify the mechanisms involved in exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH). 6

cycleFear-Avoidance Conditioning: Maintaining the Chronic Pain Cycle?

In an article recently published in Pain, researchers at the University of Leuven, Belgium propose a model for the transition from acute to chronic pain, based on fear-avoidance. 1

With this model, which describes the distinct behaviors underlying perpetuation of or breaking from pain, researchers seek to guide pain-related research as well as pain management. In this model, conditioning plays a central role in the maintenance of pain, and authors argue that its disruption may lead to recovery.
