Wellesley Books Newsletter
  August 17th, 2016
We are revving up for our fall event season, and we couldn't be more excited!  We start with a bang with Amor Towles (the author of Rules Of Civility) on September 8th when he presents his long-awaited novel A Gentleman In Moscow.  We've been reading the advance copy of this book, and we cannot wait to meet him and to sell this extraordinary volume (more on that next newsletter).  We are also presenting a series of cookbook author lectures, tastings, and signings entitled The Joy Of Cookbooks, beginning with Danielle Walker and continuing with such food luminaries as Ana Sortun, The Brass Sisters, and Dorie Greenspan (Buy tickets for all four events, and get a discount).  Don't miss the exciting Young Adult Fiction panel or childrens book author Suzanne LaFleur.  This is just the tip of the iceberg, as there will be even more announcements soon.  Check out the schedule below or the events page on our website to learn all about the author events; it's going to be a terrific season!.

Thursday, September 8th, 7:00 PM.  Amor Towles' first novel, Rules Of Civility, was a runaway bestseller and a store favorite.  Join us for an evening with Mr. Towles as he unveils his second novel, A Gentleman In Moscow, the story of an aristocrat in Russia who is placed under house arrest in a luxury hotel for more than thirty years.  Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count's endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.  Our staff has read advance copies, and it comes highly recommended by Sally, Betty, Peter, and William!  A Gentleman In Moscow is one of the best books of the year, so don't miss this chance to meet a great American author.

Tuesday, September 13th, 7:00 PM.  Author Suzanne M. LaFleur presents her new novel for intermediate readers, Beautiful Blue World, a story about children who become the key to winning a war.  For twelve-year-old Mathilde, war means food shortages, feuding neighbors, and bombings. Even so, as long as she and her best friend, Megs, are together, they ll be all right.  But the army is recruiting children, and paying families well for their service.  This is certain to be a captivating discussion of a fascinating and honest book!

Friday, September 23rd, 7:00 PM.  Wellesley Books hosts five best-selling young adult authors for one huge YA panel.  Join Lori Goldstein ( Becoming Jinn), I.W. Gregorio ( None Of The Above), Emery Lord ( When We Collided), Marie Rutkowski ( The Winner's Curse), and Nicola Yoon ( Everything, Everything) as they discuss their newest books and the writing process.  This is certain to be a lively and entertaining discussion -- you'll want to arrive early so you don't miss a single minute!  Purchase any of the authors' most recent books from Wellesley Books to join the signing line, meet the author, and have her sign your copy.

Tuesday, September 27th, 7:00 PM.  When Miriam Weinstein's good friend died unexpectedly and other losses followed close behind, it led to a year of introspection and black outfits.  All Set For Black, Thanks ditches the sanctimony to give us the help and the laughs that we actually need in times of mourning and grief.  Weinstein will present her book -- part memoir, part self help -- and she will help you get through the rough bargain of human existence.

Thursday, September 29th, 7:00 PM.  Danielle Walker is the author of two New York Times best-selling cookbooks, Against All Grain and Meals Made Simple, and her newest,  Against All Grain Celebrations -- 125 recipes for grain-free, dairy-free, gluten-free comfort food dishes for holidays and special occasions. She is also the voice behind the most popular grain-free website on the Internet, AgainstAllGrain.com.

Your $10 ticket includes Danielle's presentation PLUS free samples from her cookbook!  Want to see ALL FOUR of the authors in our The Joy of Cookbooks series? Buy the 4-for-3 ticket bundle for a great discount!

Bookseller Recommendations!
Lorna  Recommends:

  Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson
With each book she writes Jacqueline Woodson continues to exceed my expectations. Another Brooklyn moved me with it's beautiful language and it's stirring simplicity.  Like Toni Morrison, Woodson captures the very essence of the time, place, and lives of her characters. Strong, simple, and pure, her writing is easy enough to devour in a sitting and satisfying enough to make me reflect, reread, and dwell upon it for days after.  I am thrilled that Jacqueline Woodson has written another adult novel so that more readers have a chance to see what they have been missing.

William Recommends:

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
The railroad, in this phantasmagorical look at race in America, is literal - a train roaring through tunnels which were constructed like a subway, and the train leads our heroine, Cora, to several unlikely destinations.  Cora is our Gulliver (Gulliver's Travels is easily spotted as the inspiration).  Each state, each stop on the railroad, is a different version of America, displaying one way in which our country views race and manifest destiny.  Utilizing exquisite prose, Whitehead digs deeply into the troubled heart of America, exposing prejudice, tolerance, hatred, violence, and love as we stop at the distinct stations.

Betty Recommends:

The Black Widow by Daniel Silva
Another wild ride from thrill master Silva, where ISIS is the enemy and the danger feels very real. Gabriel Allon embeds an Israeli doctor in the caliphate in an attempt to learn ISIS plans and thwart an attack. We go with the stunning Doctor as she penetrates the enemy and seems almost to become them. Of course chaos ensues with a complicated set of twists. Silva has written many Gabriel Allon books and they all terrify, then satisfy. This is a perfect "don't look up from the page" book.

Phyllis Recommends:

Imagine Me Gone by Adam Haslett
This is a compelling story about a family dealing with the substantial mental health issues of both the father and one of the children. Haslett does a masterful job illustrating the perspectives of five family members as they deal with issues large and small over a forty-year period. Small moments hold humor as well as heartbreak, including a fabulous scene of a birthday dinner held at a restaurant no one can afford.  I was spellbound by the incredible writing, depth of characters, and insightful treatment of each individual's journey as an integral part of this family.

Bailey

Bailey is a mixed breed puppy who visited us with her owners recently.  We fell in love with her beautiful ears!   She was a rescue from Needham, and can already offer up her paw when told to 'shake.'  Welcome to Wellesley Books, Bailey!

"What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die."
