WASHINGTON --- The Forest Service Technology and Development Program is reviewing the wildland firefighter fire shelter system. The aluminized cloth tent offers a firefighter protection in the rare event of being entrapped --- a situation firefighters are trained to avoid. To ensure that the most advanced solutions are being explored, the Forest Service is collaborating with leading experts in textile engineering, including those at NASA's Langley Research Center in Virginia; North Carolina State University; University of Alberta; and private industry. NASA engineers are developing flexible heat shields to protect spacecraft from the high temperatures of atmospheric entry; and flexible heat shields and fire shelters have common performance requirements. Watch a 5-minute video on NASA's Web site about their collaboration with the Forest Service. Get more information about fire shelters at the National Interagency Fire Center Web site. It's a Bird --- It's a Plane --- It's a Bridge!

MILWAUKEE --- How do you distribute 90,000 pounds of bridge-building materials to 33 sites on Isle Royale National Park? Not by boat or truck, but by air, through a unique partnership between the Forest Service and National Park Service. Jim Edge, Eastern Region (R9) helicopter operations specialist, and Rob Heavirland, forest aviation officer for Chippewa and Superior National Forests, partnered with park staff to plan and prepare for the material transport. They taught 23 park employees courses in basic aviation safety and helicopter transport of external loads. Forest Service employees from the Superior, Chippewa, and Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forests, as well as the regional office, provided oversight for the material transfer. Northeastern Area Staff Consults on Trees for Land Trust

DURHAM, N.H. --- Forest health experts from Northeastern Area's Durham, NH, Field Office and the University of New Hampshire recently assessed the age and health issues of trees on a parcel of private land that the Southeast Land Trust is considering for conservation. After doing core samples of several black gums, they determined the ages to be 154-450 years old, and found symptoms of nectria canker and heart rot in some trees. The land also includes beech trees in good health and some pitch pines with signs of needlecast disease.

How Much Does That Tree Weigh?
Cover of publication titled_ Tree _ Stand Measurement

DURHAM, N.H. --- Sawtimber and pulpwood are sold by the ton, so the weight of a tree needs to be estimated while it is standing in the woods. Tree & Stand Measurement, a University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension publication, provides rough estimates. For example, an 18-inch diameter tree with 40 feet (five sticks) of merchantable wood would weigh about 1 (1.098) ton. View the publication on the University of New Hampshire Extension Web site.
