"We in workforce development and higher education need to do what hockey great Wayne Gretzky attributed his success to: skating 'to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been,'" write New Hampshire Community College Chancellor Ross Gittell and Jeremy Hitchcock, founder of Dyn, a Granite State-based internet performance management company. Gittell and Hitchcock call on industry and community college leaders to work together to build bridges and guided pathways that support economic opportunity, employment and income growth, and a strong future for the New England regional economy. In short, stronger connections of E-to-E: education-to-employment.
Insofar as return on investment (ROI) is the name of the game in higher ed, especially in business schools, a useful metric can be found by calculating the net present value (NPV) based on the costs and benefits of a college degree from a particular institution. Michael Dunlop, a visiting associate prof at Suffolk University's Sawyer Business School, explains how using a 10-year NPV is an important ROI calculation considering that a majority of graduates face important financial challenges within the first decade after graduation, including paying off student loans, purchasing a first home and starting a family. Dunlop explains how the NPV looks for different Massachusetts B-schools.
