Federal science and innovation reviews
Two key federal government consultations underway relevant to the humanities and social science research community include the Fundamental Science Review and Innovation Agenda. We encourage members to learn more about how to contribute to each. Submissions to the Science Review must be sent by September 30, submissions to the Innovation Agenda should be sent by early September with no formal deadline. The Federation will be making submissions to both reviews and will keep members apprised.

Annual Conference registration open
Registration for our Annual Conference has begun! Join us in Toronto to discuss "People, Place and Possibility: Cities and the Humanities and Social Sciences" on November 9. Featuring a Big Thinking keynote by Julian Agyeman of Tufts University on "just sustainabilities", engaging afternoon workshops and an evening reception. 
The Federation presents budget submission 2017

The Federation has presented key priorities of the humanities and social sciences community to government through an  official submission  August 5 to inform the 2017 federal budget. We welcome member feedback or information on those preparing their own submissions. 
SMART IDEAS for a better tomorrow

The Federation has launched the  Smart Ideas  initiative to help articulate the value and role of the HSS. An array of factsheets demonstrate how- through research, teaching and community engagement-Canada's leading thinkers are helping explore profound questions about who we are as Canadians and what kind of future we want for ourselves and our country.
Big Thinking on the Hill fall lineup
The exciting fall line-up begins on September 27 with Federation Board Member Cindy Blackstock addressing reconciliation and  First Nations children. This is followed by lectures on American electoral trends by Richard Johnston of University of British Columbia in October and on sexual assault laws by Carissima Mathen of uOttawa and Elaine Craig of Dalhousie in November.
Big Thinking on the Road in Kingston

Canada Research Chair at Ryerson University and member of the Royal Society of Canada's (RSC) College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists Catherine Middleton will deliver a Big Thinking lecture at the November 19 RSC Annual General Meeting. Her lecture will challenge assumptions about digital literacy in Canada and how to advance digital inclusion for all.

Canada Prizes grow to $5,000
The Federation announced on August 10 that its Canada Prizes are now worth $5,000 each. Beginning with the 2017 competition, two prizes will be awarded-one in English and one in French-to recognize the best scholarly books in the humanities and social sciences that have received funding from the Awards to Scholarly Publications Program.
HSS & Innovation op-ed
Federation President Stephen J. Toope's July 4 op-ed in The Hill Times " We can no longer overlook innovation's human dimension" points out the importance of HSS research and insight in addressing Canada's next economic, social and policy challenges.
Congress 2017 planning begins
The Congress 2017 team is already working full speed to bring you an unforgettable experience! Dozens of association conference organizers will meet with the Federation and Ryerson University on September 29 for a Planning Meeting to officially kick off the planning process. Stay tuned as Congress 2017  takes shape!
Record media coverage at Congress 2016
Over 7,800 attendees, 5,050 papers, 421 media stories, 17,818 tweets using official #congressh hashtag and a $6M economic impact on the city of Calgary are just some of the  highlights of Congress 2016 . Meanwhile planning is already underway for  Congress 2017  at Ryerson University, May 27 - June 2.

The Federation extends a warm welcome three new association members: the Indigenous Literary Studies Association (ILSA), the International Association for the Study of Popular Music - Canada Chapter (IASPM-Canada) and the Association pour la recherche au collegial (ARC). We look forward to working together!
