Governor Hogan Needs Your Help To Fill
Vacancies on Maryland Boards & Commissions

The Appointments Office was formally organized in 1967 to assist the Governor in the process of appointing individuals to full-time "at-will" positions and as members of boards and commissions.

The Appointments Office accepts applications from and interviews individuals that are interested in full-time "at-will" appointed positions in Maryland state agencies or appointments to boards and commissions.

Most Boards include "consumer members"  who have no professional association with the particular occupational board.  These members fill an important role on our boards and can be quite interesting to participate.  Please considering stepping up and helping Governor Hogan  fill vacancies on our state boards with citizens like you who care about making our state a better place to live, do business, work and retire.  If you do not know where you may fit in, simply fill out an application and the appointments office will work with you to find just the right place for you.

The best way to help Governor Hogan "Change Maryland" is to get involved!

SCAM PHONE CALLS

I wanted to make sure you were aware of a very convincing telephone scam that is circulating around our State.

A live person calls claiming to be with the IRS stating that there is a warrant for your arrest because of unpaid taxes. They threaten to arrest you unless you make an immediate payment or call another number to make payment.

This is a SCAM - the IRS never contact you by phone - they will mail you something should you have an issue.

If you receive a call of this type, just hang up!

You can report the scam via the FTC at this link:

For more information about this scam visit the IRS's webpage:

As a rule of thumb DO NOT EVER give out an personal information over the phone unless you have initiated the call.

Maryland Tax-Free Week

It's time for back-to-school shopping and Maryland residents can get a sales tax break next week.  Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week is August 14-20.  This annual sales tax holiday allows families to purchase qualifying apparel and footwear exempt from the 6 percent state sales tax.

While school uniforms, shirts, shoes, flip-flops and underwear are tax exempt, you might be surprised that pajamas, cloth diapers and bathrobes are also exempt that week. Many medical items such as adult diapers and braces are exempt, along with golf clothes, martial arts uniforms and sports uniforms.

But items on many back-to-school shopping lists - sports cleats, baseball and lacrosse gloves, book bags and backpacks are not on the list and remain taxable that week.

Online purchases may qualify if purchased and delivered between August 14-20.

A helpful list of taxable and exempt items can be found at the following link:
