NEW ORLEANS - Today, the City of New Orleans is reminding residents about the importance of safe environment for students, parents and the general public as the new school year begins.
This morning, the City's school zone flashing beacon system was activated and crews are inspecting beacons to ensure that each is fully operational. Any on-site equipment that is not functioning properly will be replaced during these site visits. Commuters should pay attention to the reduced speed limit in school zones.
In advance of the start of this school year, the City's Department of Public Works (DPW) dispatched its Pothole Killer truck to more than 150 school sites to fill potholes within a two block radius of each school, as well as clean out catch basins.
The City is working with its contractors at various locations near schools throughout New Orleans to repair infrastructure and improve drainage:
Crews are working to repair a drainage point behind the curb in the sidewalk area at 5517 Freret St. near Lusher Charter School's main campus. Work will be completed this month.
DPW has planned to make a drainage point repair and fix portions of the damaged roadway near the Louisa Street entrance of George Washington Carver Collegiate Academy. Work will be scheduled around Fall break.
In late August/ early September, DPW will begin drainage repairs at the intersection of the Canal St. and Carrollton Ave. near Sacred Heart of Jesus School.
Reminders from the New Orleans Police Department:
Review traffic safety rules - Parents dropping off their children at the bus stop should let their children exit their vehicles at curbside, away from traffic. Children should wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before approaching the bus from the curb and wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before preparing to exit.
Follow speed limit in School Zones - The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) will be conducting traffic enforcement in school zones across the city.
Reinforce general safety rules - Find another child in the neighborhood whom your child can walk to school with, remind them not to talk to strangers and remind them not to stop until they arrive at school.
Pack light - A backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of a child's body weight.

Get Started: Louisiana flooding a reminder of disaster prep
Floodwaters that have inundated southern Louisiana are a reminder to small business owners of the need to prepare for possible disasters.
The site sponsored in part by the Small Business Administration includes information on parts of disaster planning like ensuring that company records are backed up at a remote location, and creating a plan to communicate with staffers. It also has tips for planning and recovering from specific types of disasters, including floods. For that, it suggests being cautious even where floodwaters have receded, disinfecting anything that got wet and checking on whether the water supply is safe for drinking.
This includes information on disaster loans, which can be obtained by businesses and homeowners in places that have been declared federal disaster areas.
Parts of Louisiana have already received disaster declarations.
-www.fema.gov: The Federal Emergency Management Agency has a Small Business Toolkit containing information on planning and implementing disaster plans.
-www.iii.org: The Insurance Information Institute, an industry organization, has information on the types of insurance business owners should consider buying. Owners should note that flood insurance must be purchased separately and is not included in standard business policies that cover damage from wind, rain, fire and other threats.
-www.readyrating.org: The American Red Cross has information and videos to help businesses assess their readiness in case of emergency.
, for small companies that want to become federal contractors and participate in special contracting programs. The site is set up for companies that want to be certified as Women-Owned Small Businesses. The WOSB certification enables companies that are at least 51 percent woman-owned to be eligible for certain government contracting programs.
The site will be expanded by spring to include other contracting programs including the 8(a) Business Development Program aimed at economically and socially disadvantaged owners.
AUGUST 16 - NATIONAL RUM DAY - NATIONAL AIRBORNE DAY - NATIONAL ROLLER COASTER DAY - NATIONAL TELL A JOKE DAY
National Rum Day August 16
NATIONAL RUM DAY
National Rum Day is observed annually on August 16. Rum is a distilled clear alcoholic beverage which is a byproduct of molasses production or made directly from sugar cane juice. After the fermentation and distillation process, most rum is aged in wooden oak barrels.
RUM FACT: The Sugar Act of 1764, which was a tax on sugar, molasses and rum by the British on the American colonies, helped start the unrest that finally became the American Revolution.
Followed by the vodka and all the whiskies combined, rum is the third most popular spirit in the United States. It stirs up images of sandy beaches and brightly colored umbrellas in fruity drinks. And it should. It is a sweet spirit and originated in sunny Papua New Guinea. It made its way to the Caribbean by way of the West Indies.

National Airborne Day August 16
NATIONAL AIRBORNE DAY
National Airborne Day is observed each year on August 16. Designated by the United States Congress, National Airborne Day honors the nation's airborne divisions of the Armed Forces. National Airborne Day was created in 2001 by 43rd United States President, George W. Bush.
August 16, 1940, marks the date of the first official Army parachute jump at Ft. Benning, Georgia. The successful jump validated the innovative concept of inserting United States ground combat forces behind a battle line by parachute. These sky soldiers represent some of the most prestigious and effectively trained forces in the United States Army.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Thank a paratrooper and use #NationalAirborneDay to post on social media.
HISTORY

National Roller Coaster Day August 16
NATIONAL ROLLER COASTER DAY
Each year on August 16th, you will find people at amusement parks and theme parks across the country participating in National Roller Coaster Day.
In 1885, a patent was awarded to LaMarcus Adna Thompson regarding roller coasters which were made out of wood. However, there were "Russian Mountains" roller coasters considerably earlier.
The oldest roller coasters are believed to have originated from the so-called "Russian Mountains". Built in the 17th century, these were specially constructed hills of ice that were located near Saint Petersburg, Russia. The slides were made to a height of 70 to 80 feet consisting of a 50-degree drop and were reinforced by wooden supports.
A roller coaster consists of one or multiple cars on a track, similar to a specialized railroad system that rises in designed patterns, sometimes with one or more vertical loops.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Celebrate by visiting an amusement park near you and enjoying a roller coaster ride. If you cannot get to a roller coaster, make plans for your next roller coaster adventure! Use #RollerCoasterDay to post on social media.
National Tell a Joke Day August 16
NATIONAL TELL A JOKE DAY
What would be better than a day filled with laughter? National Tell a Joke Day is observed annually on August 16th, and that's no joke!
This day will be filled with smiles and much laughter from morning till night as everyone shares their favorite jokes. The more jokes you tell, the more fun you will have and so will those around you.
Jokes have been a part of human culture since at least 1900 BC.
A joke is described as something that is spoken, written or done with humorous intention. They can come in many forms. On National Tell a Joke Day, try a one-liner or a knock-knock joke if you aren't comfortable with the whole comedic act that can be involved in the short story versions. Some simply rely on gestures to express humor.
With humor, timing and delivery can be an essential element. Without it, the joke will fall flat. Be sure to know the audience. Clown jokes may not go over well at a phobia convention.
In moderation, laughter is healthy, uses the abdominal muscles and releases endorphins (natural "feel good" chemicals) into the brain.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Tell a joke, listen to a joke, laugh, celebrate, have fun and enjoy! Use #NationalTellAJokeDay to post on social media.

Louisiana Flood Relief
The Junior League of New Orleans is mobilizing to help those that have been affected by the flooding in Louisiana.
While there are many agencies who will be assisting with those affected by the floodwaters, JLNO wants to do something as a women's organization that is different. As the largest League in the state, we are best equipped due to our size and resource access to make a major impact for those affected. These donations will be given directly to the Leagues in the areas affected in order to share with their members who have suffered losses or to be given at the Leagues' discretion to help meet immediate needs in their community. We will also be sharing diapers with the American Red Cross Louisiana Region and United Way of Southeast Louisiana for dissemination to their shelters in the affected parishes.
Therefore, we are requesting the following donations:
Diapers in all sizes.
Women's feminine hygiene products to be taken to shelters.
Gift cards in $20 amounts to Target and WalMart.
Donations will be accepted at Junior League of New Orleans Headquarters, 4319 Carondelet St., during normal business hours of 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday. We will continue to accept donations until further notice. We expect to make our first deliveries to Baton Rouge and Lafayette on August 18 and August 19.
Financial contributions can also be made using the form above. We will use your donation to purchase additional products to send to shelters throughout Southern Louisiana.
Rouses Markets is partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank, and all stores are accepting cash and donations of non-perishable food, cleaning supplies and toiletries.
For those who can't make it to a cash register at the store, donations are also being accepted online.

Benjamin Rybeck - THE SADNESS
THE SADNESS is a rapturous, absorbing and wholly original novel that announces Rybeck as a surprising and inventive young writer. -Kristen Radtke
Please join us for a reading and booksigning with Benjamin Rybeck featuring his debut novel,
THE SADNESS.
Broke and homeless at 30, Kelly Enright flees Arizona. Returning to her hometown of Portland, ME, her only plan is to track down her estranged but well-off father. But her twin brother, Max, is living in their deceased mother's home, and if anyone's more screwed up than Kelly, it's disheveled, misanthropic Max.
Max has just one obsession: film. In particular, his own unfinished project from a decade earlier, which he believes is a masterpiece in the making. He dreams of completing it, but there's a major problem: Evelyn, his actress and muse, has recently disappeared. After seeing her name in the credits of a famous cult film shot in their hometown, Max thinks Evelyn's disappearance has something to do with the film, and an upcoming festival devoted to it.
Kelly's arrival upsets Max's plans for finding Evelyn. Enter Penelope Hayward, the film's star and Kelly's high school best friend. Now a major Hollywood star, Penelope arrives in Portland as the festival's guest of honor. As Max's search for his lost leading lady becomes increasingly, absurdly self-destructive, Kelly must help her brother, who has never recovered from their mother's death.
Benjamin Rybeck is the marketing director at Brazos Bookstore in Houston. He received an M.F.A. from the University of Arizona. His work has appeared in Kirkus Reviews, Electric Literature, The Rumpus, Literary Hub, The Nervous Breakdown, and elsewhere. The Sadness is his first novel.

Pete Fountain will be remembered during funeral services on Wednesday, Aug. 17, at St. Louis Cathedral. As promised by his son-in-law Benny Harrell and as befits the musician's contributions to the city's musical lexicon, the service will be followed by a second-line.
Public visitation will begin at the cathedral at 9 a.m., which will be followed by "words of remembrance" at 11:30 a.m. Mass will begin at noon, and the second-line will follow, according to a representative from Lake Lawn Funeral Home, which is handling arrangements for Fountain's family. Proceeds from the apertivo will go towards funding our Louisiana-Vietnam delegation to Salone del Gusto e Terra Madre, Slow Food's international gathering in Turin, Italy this September. LIZZIEby Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer, Tim Maner, and Alan Stevens Hewitt
In 1892 on a sweltering August day in a small New England town, a well-to-do elderly man and his second wife were brutally murdered with an axe in broad daylight. Lizzie Borden, their youngest daughter, was the primary suspect. She was arrested and tried, but, with no witnesses to the hideous crime, she was acquitted. The murders remain unsolved to this day.
LIZZIE is four women fronting a six-piece rock band. LIZZIE is rage, sex, betrayal, and bloody murder. LIZZIE is American mythology set to a blistering rock score. LIZZIE is a new American musical with a sound owing less to Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber than to Nirvana, the Runaways, and Heart.

Locals won't want to miss a look into the life of New Orleans treasure-Pete Fountain.
WYES-TV/Channel 12 will air PETE! which pays tribute to the New Orleans music legend Pete Fountain The 1980 documentary is an intimate portrait of a man known worldwide for his musical talents and as an ambassador for his hometown.
NEW ORLEANS MUSIC LEGEND PETE FOUNTAIN REMEMBERED WYES Rebroadcast of PETE! Pays Tribute To The Renowned Musician New Orleans, LA-Orleans music
legend who died August 6, WYES is pleased to rebroadcast its 1980 documentary PETE! as its own tribute to the music great. PETE! originally aired on WYES and PBS stations nationwide. The one-hour program was produced and directed by the late John Beyer. It is narrated by one of Fountain's longtime friends, comedian and singer Phil Harris. Photographers for the film were Dave Landry and Paul Combel, who spent weeks traveling with Fountain and the WYES production team to film scenes and interviews for the program. WYES-TV/Channel 12 will air PETE! Saturday, August 20 at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 21 at 7:00 p.m. For more details, visit wyes.org. "We are so glad to be able to share this piece of history with our viewers," said WYES Executive Vice- President and Chief Operating Officer Beth Arroyo Utterback. "Pete was a good friend to WYES and beloved by all of us, just as he was by so many people in the city. We think that seeing this rare footage again will bring back beautiful memories of a wonderful man and his immense talent." It is an intimate portrait of a man known worldwide for his musical talents and as an ambassador for his hometown. One of the first scenes in the program offers a rare glimpse of Fountain preparing for a show, razor in hand, shaving his face (except for the familiar mustache and goatee) and baldhead in preparation for a performance. "He may be the best jazz-based popular clarinetist in the world," Harris says at one point in the program. In addition to interviews with Fountain, the program features interviews with jazz critic and former WDSU news director Doug Ramsey, music historian Al Rose as well as Pete Fountain band members. It also features rare footage of Fountain in his youth, as he shares memories of his early musical career, including studies at "the conservatory of Bourbon Street," as he liked to joke. "I was 16 when I was playing on Bourbon Street," Fountain explains in the program, which was filmed when he was 50 years old. He explains that his first gigs were at strip clubs. "I was 15 when I played a striptease and had just got into the union. I had a ball." There is also rare film footage of Fountain and his Half-Fast Walking Club parading through the streets on Mardi Gras, as they did every year since 1960. There is even footage of a social event for club members, held during the "offseason" after Mardi Gras. "It is a sort of boys' club for swingers and the ladies are always welcome," Harris explains in the program. "This is Pete Fountain's turf and it is a direct reflection of his town and his personality. It's also a hell of a lot of fun." The program even features a rare clip of Pete doing something you never heard him do - sing! In his classic New Orleans accent, he sings a delightful version of "Sunday in the Country" over footage of his children and grandchildren at their weekend home on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Other highlights include seeing Pete and his band relaxing on the road as well as in performance at his club in the Hilton Riverside Hotel. There are also scenes of Pete enjoying fishing, as well as wonderful scenes of him and his wife Beverly and their children at home. Pete and Beverly are also seen on the dance floor, in a loving moment shared between the couple who were married 64 years. Cozy Covington, nestled in St. Tammany Parish on Lake Pontchartrain's Northshore, is still most famous as the final residence of the great writer Walker Percy. In the past several years, however, Covington has grown into an established and respected arts community, offering cultural and (par for the course in Louisiana) culinary offerings that draw visitors from the local area and throughout the region ... even getting New Orleanians across the lake.
An excellent example of Covington's commitment to the arts is its annual
White Linen Night. This event benefits the Covington Public Arts Fund, which is dedicated to fundraising for and commissioning works of art that are then donated to the City of Covington for display in public areas of the city. The organization's first commissioned piece, a monumental bronze sculpture of Walker Percy himself, is set to be unveiled on October 7.
During White Linen Night, on August 20 this year, revelers will break out their white linen clothing and explore downtown Covington. Bars and restaurants will be selling refreshments as attendees browse the shops and galleries, a cluster of food trucks will be parked and ready for business at the Tammany Trace Trailhead, and several music acts will entertain outdoors throughout the event.
So break out your iron (unless you prefer the disheveled bohemian look), choose some comfy shoes, and plan your getaway to the third annual
Covington White Linen Night, from 6 pm to 9 pm on August 20.

Krewe of OAK Mid-Summer Mardi Gras is Aug. 27. The krewe and costumed revelers and marching groups gather on Oak Street at the Maple Leaf Bar and parade to Palmer Park. The group marks its 30th parade with the theme "Get Wet." The krewe holds its ball at the Maple Leaf after the event.
this year's Krewe of OAK parade will take off on Saturday, August 27 at 8:00 p.m. from the front of the Maple Leaf Bar.
Instead of traditional Mardi Gras floats, which would be too big to pass along the Carrollton neighborhood's narrow streets, OAKers instead parade in outlandishly decorated golf carts and on foot. One or more brass bands also march with the parade. Residents of the neighborhood join in the fun with marching groups of their own, like the "Bearded Oysters Dance Troupe," a group of women led by a Mother Shucker in a Mardi Bra.
The parade route is about a mile and a quarter in length and the marchers stop at several neighborhood bars along the way. The Krewe of OAK parade ends where it began, in front of the Maple Leaf Bar, where the krewe's "Mid-Summer Carnival Ball" is held.
The ball begins at around midnight. There is a cover charge to get into the bar and attend the ball, but that includes beer and food. The tickets to the ball, however, are now available only from krewe members. Many guests are costumed, although in very unconventional ball attire. This is really a mini, mock Mardi Gras, in the best New Orleans neighborhood tradition.

The first ever Beignet Fest will be held Oct. 8 in Lafayette Square.
Just when you thought the city couldn't possibly dedicate a festival to yet another indigenous food item, a local nonprofit has announced the lineup for the first-everBeignet Fest this fall.
The festival - which aims to raise funds for children with autism - takes place October 8 at Lafayette Square and will feature both sweet and savory versions of the iconic fried dough confection from local restaurants.
Local couple Amy and Sherwood Collins hatched the idea for the festival to donate proceeds to the Tres Doux Foundation, which they founded to help raise awareness and funds for autism programs in New Orleans.
"Through our journey with our son, Liam, who is on the autism spectrum, we found out there's a gap in accessible programming for kids on the spectrum, and we wanted to change that,"Amy Collins said in a prepared statement. "So, we are doing what we do best - creating and managing a festival with amazing food and music!"
While the festival is free and open to the public, apportion of the proceeds from food and beverage sales will go toward the foundation. Guests will be able to cast their vote for a favorite in several categories including best sweet, savory, most original and all around crowd favorite.
The musical lineup includes Big Sam's Funky Nation, John "Papa" Gros Band, Los Po-Boy-Citos, The Confetti Park Players Children's Chorus and
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.
