Presenters included (from left to right) Dr. Mark Doherty, Executive Director of Safety Net Solutions, Da-Nell Rogers, SNS Project Manager, served as the facilitator, Dr. Daniel Brody, Dental Director at Valley Health in West Virginia, Dr. Mark Koday, Chief Dental Officer at Yakima Valley Farm Worker's Clinic in Washington and Safety Net Solutions Expert Advisor, Dr. Colleen Anderson, Associate Dental Director at Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, and Dori Bingham, Safety Net Solutions Program Manager. Expert Advisor Spotlight - Dr. William Donigan Receives Award!
Safety Net Solutions Expert Advisors are practicing dentists with experience and knowledge of safety net dental practices.  They play a very important role in the Practice Improvement work conducted by our Safety Net Solutions staff here at the DentaQuest Institute.  Expert Advisors spend time on-site interacting with staff and observing operations and systems to capture qualitative information such as the culture of the practice, along with structure and processes.  The motto of the SNS Expert Advisors is "Observe carefully and listen intently."

SNS Expert Advisor Dr. William Donigan was recognized as this year's Outstanding Provider by the  North Carolina Community Health Center Association (NCCHCA).  Click to Read More.

The View from Here: The Exciting Future of Caries Disease Management
It's often said that you can't know where you are going until you know where you've been. As the newest member of the DentaQuest Institute's (DQI) Quality Improvement team, I have been committed to doing just that; understanding and appreciating the monumental work that the QI team, faculty and collaborative teams have accomplished in caries management while simultaneously thinking ahead about innovative approaches that we can take in the future.

MORE Care Colorado Kicks Off in Colorado Springs
In partnership with the Colorado Rural Health Center, 3 Rural Health Clinics (RHCs) gathered in Colorado Springs, CO on June 30 to kick off MORE Care: Colorado at its 1st learning session. Building on the MORE Care rural medical-dental integration work that began in 2015 with the South Carolina Office of Rural Health,  RHCs in Colorado convened to begin the process of transforming their care delivery experience to include oral health as part of their patient's healthcare. MORE Care looks to improve the oral health of patients living in rural areas through increasing the oral health preventive workforce, developing a shared responsibility in primary care for early detection of oral disease, and strengthening pathways for primary care providers to refer and communicate with dental providers.
Stay tuned for the release of a new Interprofessional Practice online learning module this Fall!

Update from the Analytics and Publication Team
We are pleased to announce the DentaQuest Institute is partnering with the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research ( NIDCR) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to create a 2-year full-time Fellowship in Oral Health Informatics (OHI). DQI will help fellows access dental electronic health record (EHR) databases to provide opportunities for conducting informatics research. Applications will be accepted from July 15, 2016, through Jan 15, 2017, and the fellow will begin in July 2017. Further details and application are available on the  NIDCR website.

Analytics and Publication presented a scientific research poster at the 2016 AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting (ARM). This fantastic meeting brings together over 2,400 attendees from a multitude of backgrounds, organizations, and disciplines to attend more than 150 educational sessions. Regardless of specializing in health economy, health disparities, or clinical research, we are all health service researchers. Our poster, titled "Gender and Race Inequalities in National and State Emergency Department Visits for Dental / Oral Health Conditions," was presented at the Disparities Interest Group and general poster sessions, and was one of the few posters dedicated to oral health.

Xylitol Makes Fluoride Work Better?
There has been a lot of talk about xylitol around the Institute lately. If you're not keeping up to speed on this sugar alcohol, you may have missed the March 2015 Cochrane Review concerning xylitol. The latest evidence indicates that toothpaste containing both xylitol and fluoride may reduce caries rates more than fluoride toothpaste alone. Research on other xylitol delivery systems like gum and mints wasn't strong enough to convince the Cochrane Collaboration of caries reduction, although a separate Cochrane Review pointed out that xylitol can reduce acute middle ear infections in children by 25%.
