Create Your Campus Community
A great way to start making Miami home is to become more confident in your ability to succeed, comfortable and at ease on campus, connected through our programs, and curious about new ideas and opportunities. You might be wondering how to do that. The first step is creating community on campus. This newsletter is full of opportunities for you to create your community.
Living with a Roommate - Part 3
Your Future Roommate(s)
Hawk Herald #2 and Hawk Herald #3   included information regarding your rights as a roommate, as well as the roommate agreement you will complete with your roommate(s) when you join your residence hall community. This last installment about creating successful roommate relationships focuses on a third and very important topic: living with someone who is different than you.

You don't expect your roommate to be exactly the same as you, right? Of course not.   Sure, you will be members of the class of 2020,  perhaps be in the same Living Learning Community (LLC), and you & your roommate will want to make new friends, get good grades, and graduate from Miami. But you will be different as well. You might have different hobbies, music tastes, sleep habits and you might not agree on which snacks are the best -- all of which are good starting points to discuss with each other --but there will also be other differences that are important to discuss too: your backgrounds, your values and beliefs, and any fears you have about sharing your residence hall space. By "backgrounds", we don't just mean your hometowns, but we also mean from where you have come socially, racially, economically, ethnically, spiritually, culturally, and so forth. Learning about these differences is an opportunity for you to learn about your roommate, and yourself, over the course of the year as you live together.  So, start off with what toppings you each like on your pizzas, and once the agreed-upon toppings have been decided and the pizza (thin crust or thick?) arrives - you and your roommate can engage in discussions about each of your backgrounds so you can be even better roommates with each other.

Code of Love and Honor: I Am Miami

I Am Miami.  I believe  that a liberal education is grounded in qualities of character and intellect.  I stand  for honesty, integrity, and the importance of moral conduct.  I respect  the dignity, rights, and property of others and their right to hold and express disparate beliefs.  I defend  the freedom of inquiry that is the heart of learning.  I exercise  good judgment and believe in personal responsibility.  I welcome  a diversity of people, ideas, and experiences.  I embrace  the spirit, academic rigor, opportunities, and challenges of a Miami Experience, preparing me to make the world a better place.  I demonstrate  Love and Honor by supporting and caring for my fellow Miamians.  And because I Am Miami,  I act  through my words and deeds in ways that reflect these values and beliefs.  With a deep sense of accomplishment and gratitude,  I will  Love, Honor, and make proud those who help me earn the joy and privilege of saying,
"To think that in such a place, I led such a life."
