This week's edition of the NAMI-NYS E-Newsletter features a link to the recently published NAMI-NYS Summer Newsletter which contains information about our 2016 Education Conference. NAMI-NYS will be making our official conference announcement next week. This edition also has information on the hiring of a new Chief Medical Officer at SAMHSA, an account of a manic episode which garnered headlines in New York City and how politicians and the media need to be aware of the impact of how they speak about mental illness during campaign season.

NAMI-NYS Publishes our
Summer Newsletter
NAMI-NYS just published the summer edition of our print Newsletter. The Newsletter is in the process of being mailed out and members should be receiving it shortly.
The Summer Newsletter contains the first look at our 2016 Education Conference New Horizons in Recovery: Breakthroughs in Research and Treatment, which will be taking place November 11-13 at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center. We will be making our official conference announcement next week with more details about recently added speakers and further information on our Friday evening and Saturday afternoon featured sessions.
The Newsletter also contains articles on our legislative advocacy, the 2016 NAMI-NYS Ribbon Campaign as well a summary of the spring NAMIWalks and our upcoming inaugural NAMIWalk NYS.
NAMI-NYS to Have an Information Kiosk
at Colonie Center Throughout August
NAMI-NYS is proud to announce that we have been selected to be the designated charity for August at the Colonie Center shopping mall in Albany. Throughout the month, NAMI-NYS will have an information kiosk by the mall's food court of materials on our work, the NAMI Signature Programs, the 2016 Education Conference and our upcoming NAMIWalks NYS. Colonie Center will be generously donating all the money people leave in the their fountain to NAMI-NYS. We are extremely grateful for this opportunity.

NAMI Praises the Hiring of New SAMHSA
Chief Medical Officer
On Wednesday, August 10th, the
U.S. Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced the hiring of the appointment of Anita Everett, M.D. as Chief Medical Officer (CMO). NAMI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mary Giliberti praised the hiring, mentioning that Dr. Everett has long been a friend to NAMI and that she will "bring a wealth of leadership experience and clinical expertise to help SAMHSA meet challenges at every level."

A Manic Episode Led Me to Strip Naked in
Times Square
Krit McClean made headlines in late June by stripping naked in Times Square and jumping from the top of the TKTS booth. The 21-year-old fashion model and college student spoke publicly for the first time about his meltdown with The New York Post. Krit provides harrowing details of the events leading up to his psychotic break and how his family tried to get him help. Since being arrested for the incident, he was hospitalized, diagnosed with bipolar disorder and began going to weekly sessions with a doctor. He also mentions reaching out and receiving support from NAMI. Krit and his family's story is similar to that of many of our members and we welcome the McCleans as a part of our NAMI family.

Patrick Kennedy Urges Media and Others to Stop Calling Donald Trump Crazy
Former Congressman and mental health advocate Patrick Kennedy wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post which details how the media keeps asking "Is Donald Trump experiencing a mental illness? ...the answer is: I don't know. And neither do the commentators, tweeters and psychiatrists - both licensed and armchair - who've diagnosed him from afar as 'crazy,' a 'psychopath,' not 'sane,' having 'narcissistic personality disorder' and a 'screw loose."' Even though Rep. Kennedy differs with Mr. Trump on political ideology, he still urges the media to stop this type of coverage as it demeans those with mental illness. Furthermore he states that "perpetuation of stigmatizing, outdated stereotypes makes it harder for those experiencing mental illness to seek the treatment they need."
DISCLAIMER: NAMI-NYS DOES NOT endorse political candidates or campaigns. We do agree with Congressman Kennedy that all candidates and the media must refrain from using mental illness and negative verbiage about psychiatric disorders as a tool to insult and demean politicians, elected officials and those who they don't agree with. We have reported throughout this campaign season how candidates have discussed mental illness in both a positive and negative way and will continue to do so in an unbiased manner.

NIMH to Host Webinar Addressing
Mental Health Disparities
On Wednesday, August 31st from 2-3pm, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Mental Health will host a webinar exploring Mental Health Disparities Research at NIMH: Cross-cutting aspects of the NIMH Strategic Plan. The webinar will feature two presentations.
The first will be Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Healthcare Visits Before Suicide Attempts. This will feature Brian Ahmedani, Ph.D., L.M.S.W,.Director of Psychiatry Research, Behavioral Health Services, Research Scientist, Center for Health Policy and Health Services Research Henry Ford Health System.
The second will be Racial/Ethnic Differences in Biological Aging: Relations of Behavioral and Lifestyle Factors to Telomere Length This will feature Olivia Okereke, M.D., M.S. Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, Associate Professor of Epidemiology, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
NIH recognizes a unique and compelling need to reduce and eliminate mental health disparities in communities across the country. This webinar will present exemplary studies that represent strategic objectives of the NIMH Strategic Plan for Research. NIMH-funded researchers who have investigated mental health disparities will present their preliminary findings. This webinar will be moderated by Su Yeon Lee-Tauler, Ph.D., Scientific Program Lead in Mental Health Disparities Research of NIMH's Office for Research on Disparities and Global Mental Health. This webinar is appropriate for NIMH-funded grantees, students, researchers, policy makers, clinicians, and anyone interested in learning more about mental health disparities research at the NIMH and the NIH.
