Did You Know? Medical Evaluations - Part Two

A1Medical evaluations are extremely important during a child abuse investigation. Child abuse diagnosis requires specific expertise and specialized training to identify signs of abuse and separate general inquiries and physical concerns from those caused by abuse and neglect.

The pediatricians currently at the CAC are two of only five in the state of Oklahoma who are specifically trained in child abuse pediatrics ( Dr. Michael A. Baxter and Dr. Sarah Passmore). Dr. Baxter serves as the medical director for the new child abuse pediatrics fellowship program at OU-Tulsa School of Community Medicine. Dr. Lauren Conway is the first fellow for the program.

Dr. Baxter recently said in an interview when asked "What is the most rewarding part about being a child abuse pediatrician?": " Our job comes with difficulties, but we also see some of the best aspects of humanity and work with true heroes: the staff who spend time with these children outside of normal working hours, the detectives who enter horrific scenes where children have been harmed, the forensic interviewers who listen to children's stories, and the prosecutors who advocate for justice."

Dawn Barrick Creating Awareness of CAN

A3Dawn Barrick, CAN's volunteer coordinator, was busy creating awareness of CAN last week at many community events. On Aug. 15, Dawn spoke to students at the Northeastern State University - Broken Arrow "Welcome Week" event about volunteer opportunities at CAN.

Then, on Aug. 16, she was present at the "OU Summer Institute" event. Here she was able to answer questions that students had about volunteering opportunities, programs and services provided at the CAC.

On Aug. 18, Dawn attended the Boevers Elementary School "Community Night" event. At this event they provide a Resource Fair and this is what Dawn was set up for. She handed out newsletters, fact sheets, and contact info for CAN.

If you would like Dawn to give a presentation at your company or school, please contact her at dbarrick@childabusenetwork.org.

With a Little Help from Our Friends

And then on Aug. 22, 97.5 KMOD's Lynn Hernandez donated a variety of stuffed animals collected by him and his children ( photo on right: Lynn is standing between CAN staff members Shelia Minor-Johnson and Dawn Barrick).

We greatly appreciate all of the donations we receive throughout the year. If you would like to make a donation to CAN, please bring donations to the Children's Advocacy Center (2829 S. Sheridan).
