July 2016
Notes from the Principal:

I hope you are having a wonderful start to your summer, and that it has been filled with fun and relaxation.  I have been and will continue to be working diligently with my staff to prepare for yet another fantastic year at Watkins Middle School.  I am looking forward to meeting all of our new 6th graders on August 22nd, and then seeing everyone on August 23rd.  Finally, I encourage everyone to follow us on Facebook and subscribe to our email distribution list located on the Watkins Middle School homepage.  These two communication resources will help you stay informed this coming school year.  Have a wonderful rest of the summer!

How to help your student learn
Summer Tips!

Summer can and should be a great time to relax.  It can also be a time to help your child keep up with their studies while still having some fun.  I encourage everyone to find ways this summer to challenge your children to think critically and apply some of that knowledge they learned last school year.  If you are looking for even more ways to help your child avoid the dreaded summer dip in learning, encourage them to read at least 20 minutes a day.  You could also find some amazing ideas from the article below to help weave math into your summer routine.

Teacher Spotlight
Welcome to our new teachers at WMS!

This summer we have hired three new teachers to our building and have gained one from the high school.  Mr. Jim White is joining us from the high school to teach one of our special education unit classrooms.  Our new 7th grade social studies teacher will be Ms. Haley Gwilliams.  Mr. Bryce Phillips will be our new 8th grade language arts teacher, and finally, our new computer applications teacher will be Mrs. Rebecca Holloway.  They will all be valuable assets to our building.
