Welcome to the 2016-17 school year. Our hallways are buzzing with activity as our maintenance department puts the finishing touches to the cleaning, painting and repairs of our buildings. Our transportation department also is getting our fleet and bus routes ready. Staff is coming in and getting their spaces ready. The band is practicing, with music filling the air. Whistles are blowing as our fall athletic teams are in full practice mode.
On August 24, we will welcome the kindergartners (the future Class of 2029) to their first day of school and we also welcome our seniors (the Class of 2017) to their last first day. We wish both, and every grade in between, a great year.
The 2016-17 school year holds a great deal of promise for our schools, students and community. This year, in addition to many other initiatives, we begin our journey into learning through 1:1 technology. Third and fourth graders will have chromebooks to use while in school. For the 2017-18 school year, fifth graders will have a chromebook to use while in school and the sixth graders will each be given a chromebook to keep and use in school and at home for the remainder of their middle school years. We are also outfitting departments at the high school with chromebooks. While this is a significant investment, it is a critical one. We have to make sure that we are preparing our students for their future and our classrooms need to represent the world they will be living in, not the classrooms and world we lived in.
Our schools and our classrooms need to be places where children can thrive and grow. We need spaces designed to encourage communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. Our current facilities do not do that. The bond issue on the November 8 ballot is about the future of education in the North Royalton City Schools, not facilities. This is the time for our community to make an investment in the future. I ask everyone to go to our website at

I am excited for the start of this school year and look forward to seeing all of our students and staff on August 24, our parents at the open houses, and community members at one of our many events this year.

Table 1 compares our monthly operating receipts to the prior year actual for the first month of our fiscal year (July 2016 through June 2017). It further estimates our collection through our fiscal year end. You will notice two large collection points in our fiscal year which are July and February. These two months are considerably higher than the others due to real estate collection which represents over 70% of our revenues.
Table 2 compares our monthly operating expenditures to the prior year actual for the first month of our fiscal year (July 2016 through June 2017). It further estimates our expenditures through our fiscal year end. You will notice a consistent expenditure pattern throughout our fiscal year due to salaries and wages being evenly distributed throughout our fiscal year.
Table 3 illustrates the current actual cumulative monthly operating revenues and expenditures for the first month of our fiscal year (July 2016 through June 2017). It further estimates our cumulative revenues and expenditures through our fiscal year end. You will notice a gradual increase in both revenues and expenditures as we approach our fiscal year end where revenues and expenditures eventually meet.
Table 4 illustrates our fiscal year to date operating expenditures by category for the first month of our fiscal year (July 2016 through June 2017). Salary and Wages represent approximately 55%, Fringe Benefits 25%, Purchased Services 16%, Materials Supplies Textbooks 2% and the combination of Capital Outlay and Operational Fees 2%.

Please Join the North Royalton Band Boosters in "Filling a Truck" August 20-21 for Easter Seals
 An Easter Seals truck will be parked west of the North Royalton Board of Education at 6579 Royalton Road to accept donations of clothing, blankets, towels, shoes, purses, stuffed animals, cloth lunchboxes and backpacks, etc on August 20 (9am-6pm)
and 21 (1pm - 6pm).
The more items we donate, the more money we will raise! (*All donations are tax deductible and you will receive a receipt when you drop off your items). Our goal is to Fill The Truck to capacity to support our North Royalton Marching Band. We challenge you to fill a bag with clothing items and donate it to our fundraiser. At the same time, we will be helping local children and adults with disabilities.
Start "stashing your stuff" and do something great for children and adults with disabilities while helping the North Royalton High School Band! You can use ANY bag for donations! No hard goods will be accepted at this event.
Students Recognized for their Achievements at Board of Education Meeting
At the North Royalton Board of Education Meeting on August 8, several North Royalton High School students from the Class of 2016 were recognized for many accomplishments throughout the past school year.
Brian Chu, Owen Benefiel and Ryan Chester were recognized for their perfect ACT scores. Brian Kozik, Brian Chu, Own Benefiel and Ryan Chester were recognized as National Merit Finalists.

Chester was also recognized for winning the National Geographic Breakthrough Junio
r Challenge international competition, earning a $250,000 scholarship and $100,000 towards new science lab/equipment for the high school.
Lastly, six students were recognized as National AP Scholars by The College Board based on the scores on their Advanced Placement (AP) exams. In order to achieve this title, students must have an average score of four out of five on all AP exams taken and scores of four or higher on eight or more exams.
The six students were Murugappan Singaram who took nine exams, earned an average score of 4.67, and will be attending The Ohio State University next year; Brian Chu who took 11 exams, earned an average score of 4.87, and will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall; Brian Kozik who took 11 exams, earned an average score of 4.64 and will be attending Arizona State University in the fall; Valerie Muldoon who took nine exams, earned an average score of 4.67 and will be attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall; Owen Benefiel took eight exams, earned an average score of 4.75 and will be attending the University of Notre Dame in the fall; and Ryan Chester took nine exams, earned a score of 5 on each one and will be attending Harvard University in the fall.
"Thank you to Ryan, Brian, Owen, Brian, Valerie and Murugappan and their parents and AP teachers for placing such an importance on their education and for working so hard to achieve," said Sean Osborne, principal, North Royalton High School. "You represent what is great about North Royalton Schools."
Overall, for the 2015-2016 school year, 310 students took 486 exams and averaged a score of 3.63.
