SAINTS PETER AND PAUL SCHOOL
TOMMY WALTER '99
BELIEVES IN GIVING BACK

Tommy Walter has always loved Saints Peter and Paul School. "I had a wonderful experience," he said, "and some of my best lifelong friends are as a result of relationships that were formed during my time here."  Given those remarks, it's no surprise that Tommy has played an active role at his alma mater.

His first foray was joining classmates Katie Zavodny Paski, Mike White, and his twin brother, Justin, in organizing a 10 year reunion for classmates in Zuker Hall that featured a Fun Fair theme.  "We all agreed that it would be a lot of fun from an adult perspective and my parents helped recreate some of the same activities we enjoyed as children."

An avid basketball fan, in 2008 the University of Miami grad sought out former athletic director Mike Chiarito to inquire if there were any opportunities for him to coach.  "At the upper levels, we've always believed it was in the best interest of our student-athletes to have someone other than the parent of a team member coach," Chiarito replied.  "Very often, however, that was not possible so when Tommy came forward we were happy to welcome him into the fraternity."

Tommy's first venture was with the seventh grade boys in 2011.  He followed that class to 8th grade and has remained the 8th grade coach since 2012.  This past year saw his greatest success on the hard court when his team captured the DuPage Parochial League championship.  "We had a great group of boys," Walter offered, "and while we were the pre-season favorite to go all the way, that target on our backs added some additional pressure to our season."

As exciting as that victory over St. Joe's (Downers Grove) was, there was another highlight Tommy was equally proud of.  "Five years ago we initiated an 80's Night theme and thought it might be fun for the team, parents, and students.  It turned out not only to be exciting but we pack the gym with all proceeds going to the Special Olympics."

Athletics isn't the only way he is making his presence felt, however.  While not a formal member of the faculty, Tommy has taught a popular finance class to the eighth grade in the evening for the past six years.  "When I started college I couldn't believe how many of the freshmen had no clue about their personal finances or how to budget.  Friends and classmates were broke by Christmas and just charged things until their credit card maxed out," said the Finance major who is a financial advisor employed by Strategic Advisers in Naperville, Illinois.  "I promised myself that I would try and teach young children the value of a dollar, the importance of saving, and give them a rudimentary understanding of the stock market," he volunteered.  Using Rich Dad, Poor Dad as a textbook, the class also touches on investments, managing money, the importance of consistent saving no matter how small the amount, and risk.  The results have been more than gratifying as both his students, and parents, sing his praises.  "It opened my eyes to a lot of things," offered Luke Phillipp '16, "now I pay attention when they talk about the Dow Jones on a newscast and I'm just as apt to read the finance pages as well as the sports pages."

SSPP Trivia

When our school was founded in 1853....

....graduates could never have thought of attending college at the University of Miami because it wasn't chartered in until 1925 by a group of citizens who felt an institution of higher learning was needed for the development of their young and growing community.
