Registration opens for 2016 Security and Crisis Communications Conference: Preparing for Special and Unexpected Events
NWABR is pleased to announce the plans for its third annual Security and Crisis Communications conference. This one day conference will be held in the Volney Auditorium, Virginia Mason Hospital on Thursday, September 29, 2016. The conference will run from 8.30am to 2.30pm.

BREAKING NEWS: Two new Regional 3I's Conferences.
3I'S CONFERENCES Portland (NOVEMBER 29, 2016) AND Spokane (DECEMBER 7, 2016)
Please note: in an earlier version of this email the above dates were mistakenly transposed. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
In response to demand from research communities in Eastern WA, MT, ID and in OR NWABR is hitting the road.
A 3I's conference combines the core material covered in traditional IACUC, IRB and IBC conferences and delivers this material in an accessible way, with plenty of time for networking, small group discussions and information sharing.
This conference is aimed particularly for members of IACUC, IRB and IBC Committees and for support staff and advisors for these committees. Researchers who work with these Committees will also benefit from attending as they will gain an improved understanding of how these committess work.
The detailed program for each of these conferences is currently being developed. The core program of each conference will be similar with some regional variations based on local expertise. The conference registration fees for these conferences will be $75 for staff of member organizations and $95 for non-member organizations (lunch and other refreshments will be provided)

The Spokane Conference is being hosted at the Philanthropy Center 1020 W Riverside Ave., Spokane, WA 99201.
PORTLAND CONFERENCE

Registration opens for 2017 IBC Conference
INSTITUTIONAL BIOSAFETY COMMITTEE CONFERENCE
JOIN US FOR NWABR'S STANDALONE INSTITUTIONAL BIOSAFETY COMMITTEE CONFERENCE
January 25, 2017, 9.00am to 4.30pm at the Alki Room, Century Square, Seattle WA.
The role and complexity of the work of Institutional Biosafety Committees has markedly increased over the last few years. This conference aims to provide professional development and sharing and networking opportunities for IBC professionals and committee members.
The conference is being planned by leading IBC professionals from throughout the Pacific Northwest and will include a variety of sessions focused on emerging regulations, best practices and lessons learned. A major aim of the conference is to build a network of IBC professionals who can together create a shared learning experience for the benefit of all biomedical researchers.

- ·A one day meeting on February 22, 2017 covering hot topics related to animal care and use, led by facilitators from around the United States
- Exhibit tables on February 22, 2017 so attendees can meet with those in the field providing valuable resources and service

Camp BioMed Producing Amazing Results!
This is the second to last week for Camp Biomed with many of the camps being full to capacity this year. The camps work with students entering grades 9-12 and features three unique camp experiences
- Cancer Laboratory/DIY Biology - the Molecular Biology of Cancer,
- Next Gen Science - Origami of Life & Bioinformatics, and
- CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) - Forensics and Molecular Biology.
Camp is centrally located on the beautiful campus of Seattle Pacific University.
Students have attended this year from British Columbia, California, Alaska and Maryland. Heather Velthuis from BC joined camp for the third year in a row. She said that she is "always willing to travel for this camp, as I love science, and there is nothing like this in BC"
The lab space that has been provided at Seattle Pacific University for the camps this year has been a huge bonus, and we owe a huge debt to SPU for giving us the opportunity to give high school students such a powerful science experience this summer.

July 21, IRB Conference Huge Success
Over 350 people turned up or tuned in to hear an impressive range of speakers at the annual IRB conference co-presented by NWABR and Quorum Review IRB. The conference was also run with the support of Platinum Sponsors the University of Washington and the WIRB-Copernicus Group. Boston University managed the CE credits for all attendees at the conference.
The theme of the conference was Ethics and Regulations in the Digital Age.
Keynote speaker Max Little joined us via video feed from Croatia. Max discussed the ethical implications of mHealth technologies particularly drawing on his own research into Parkinson's disease and the use of wearable technology. Joaquin A. Anguera continued this theme reporting on his work with the use of online games to improve cognitive health.
Both speakers touched on some of the challenges that these emerging technologies provide to IRB committees and the need for committees to be able to understand the research, the potential benefits and the inherent risks, including privacy risks.
Cheryl Grandinetti from the FDA and Misti Ault Anderson from OHRP both provided regulatory updates, and also addressed how existing regulations and planned changes allow for IRB committees to deal with emerging technology and human subject protections. This theme was further pursued by Eric Ma and Jeremy Block who gave their own insights into how IRBs can keep up with mobile technologies.
The afternoon sessions of the conference introduced us to the Precision Medicine Initiative (Malia Fullerton), Thought Leader Perspectives on Informed Consent (Catherine M. Hammack and Kathleen Brelsford) and Sharing Individual and Aggregate Results (Barbara Bierer).
The day was rounded out by a panel discussion involving David Forster, Misti Ault Anderson, Eric Mah and Karen Hansen who discussed the challenges of Centralized IRBs.
