Orientation Day

Welcome Class of 2020!  On Thursday, the incoming freshman class was welcomed to our campus.  They spent the day getting their photos taken, enjoying activities in the gym with the Link Crew, and attending an all-school orientation.  They also had iPad training so they are all set up and ready to go.  We also welcomed back our sophomores, juniors and seniors.  It's going to be a great year to be a Garces Ram!
Tonight's Football Scrimmage

Tonight is the traditional intra-squad Green and White Scrimmage. The scrimmage will be played on the lower field behind the concession stand. Please bring your own seating. The Frosh scrimmage will begin at 5:00 p.m. with the JV/Varsity scrimmage to follow.  The concession stand will be open.
Eagle Scout - Kenneth Russo

Congratulations to Garces senior Kenneth Russo!  On June 5th, the Boys Scouts of America held a Court of Honor for Kenneth where he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.  His service project was building a storage shed for St. Philip the Apostle Church.  The shed will serve as a California Redemption Value Storage and will be used to collect and store the CRV items (cans and plastic water bottles) for recycling.
REVS UP Summer Program

Every summer, Cal State Bakersfield offers a program called REVS UP through their School of Natural Science, Mathematics, and Engineering.  The program is funded by Chevron and is geared towards high school students to increase their interest in science and mathematics careers.  REVS-UP offers hands-on research experiences for teams in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, mathematics, and physics. Several Garces students participated this summer.  Below are photos of Garces students Claudia Millar, Damian Wimberly, and Eduardo Munoz taken by Garces teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Kloock, who went and supported the students during their final team project presentations.
Iceland Trip

Accompanied by Garces instructors, Ms. Jessica Pavletich and Ms. Mandee Dees, Garces students traveled to Iceland this summer.  They were able to earn college credits while touring Iceland and learning all about their habitat.  They traveled all over south eastern Iceland and saw amazing views and learned a lot about their environment and way of life.  Some of the sights they saw were: Reykjavík, the Settlement Exhibition, the Music Hall, the Lava Fields, the Gullfoss Waterfall, Arnessysia, Icelandic horses, Eyjafjalllajökull, black sand beaches, and the Icelandic Puffins.  The students visited a farm that uses the earth's energy to bake bread and another that used solar energy to grow tomatoes.  They also hiked a glacier and swam in the world famous Blue Lagoon.

A film crew followed our students and created the following video to promote future trips to Iceland: Iceland Video

How many of you remember your first day of high school or for that matter, first days in general?  For many of us, they were exciting, scary, funny, and well, the list could go on and on, depending on each of our experiences.  As Jenny Han states, " Firsts are best because they are beginnings."  We want your student's first day of school to be memorable, exciting, inviting and yes, the best.  Our faculty, staff and administration will work together to greet your students with a message that says, "It's great to have you here at Garces.  Welcome to the school voted the Best Private School in the County."  Please retrieve your memories of your "first day of school," and help us make this day and year the best ever for your child(student).

Here are a few reminders to help you and your student transition into the new school year.

Schedules were handed out to all freshmen and transfer students at Orientation. Returning students accessed their schedules on netclassroom

Students must order their books from the online bookstore, Follett.  The link is posted on the Garces website under the Parents tab.  If your student ordered an ebook. They will receive an email from Follett, 2-3 days from purchase, giving them access codes to the ebooks.

Students will receive information regarding the 8th period class during Orientation.  They will have the option to enroll in the 8th period class, Fitness or Internship, beginning the week of August 22nd. Parent permission will be required for enrollment in the class. Forms for enrollment will be available in the Counseling Center beginning August 15th.

8th Period ESL will be mandatory for all new incoming International students   if you are a host parent, please contact Mrs. Sakowski regarding this class.  Students will receive a grade for this class, which will calculate into their GPA

Welcome Back!

I truly am excited for this year as so many incredible things have taken place with our campus. The football field renovation, the new practice field addition, the resurfacing of the student quad and the current remodel of the student center are all a testament of the labor of love and investment that so many have put forth to make Garces the best.

Unfortunately, a welcome back from me won't be complete without bringing up discipline. It truly is my hope that your child never ends up in my office for a disciplinary reason. In an effort to avoid that please help me by reminding your student of a few things. First, some of our young men will now need to shave daily instead of monthly. Second, the skirt length rule continues to be 5 visible yellow lines. It is important to note that if the 5 lines are not visible because the skirt has been hemmed in such a way or a shirt hangs over a line then the skirt is not meeting the dress code rule. We will continue to insist that a student that receives 3 dress code violations will have to wear uniform shorts or pants for the remainder of that semester. Third, games on the iPad while at school is still not allowed. Thanks for your help with these issues.

It is fun to see the growth and maturation that has taken place with our students over the summer. Some seem that they have grown 12 inches physically while others seem that they have become giants personally. It is my prayer at the start of this year that they will grow into the incredible young men and women that God has intended.
