An Update for Friends of Highfields · August 11, 2016
Bullied Teen Finds Relief
You helped Dana find her confidence again after being bullied at school.
Bullying can happen anywhere and to anyone. For Dana, it happened at school and it flipped her world upside down. Thankfully, Dana is getting the support she needs and can handle difficult moments, thanks to you.

Fifteen year-old Dana had problems that she didn't know how to fix. She was bullied at school by her peers and felt angry, anxious and sad. She lost her father 10 years ago and struggled to develop a healthy relationship with her mom, Tina.
Tina noticed that Dana was having problems and she didn't know how to help her.
"Between bullying and peer pressure, Dana had a lot of aggression," said Tina. "That's what got us involved with Highfields."

Breaking the Cycle
Mike grew up in a poor household, but he didn't let that define him. Instead, Mike used his disadvantages to inspire troubled youth at Highfields.
Mike came from a very poor family. He was raised by his grandmother because his parents were unable to take care of him. Although he struggled, he found his place working at Highfields and empowering kids to break the cycle.

When Mike was growing up he felt disadvantaged.
"I didn't have the greatest background," said Mike. "My grandmother raised me because my dad was in prison and my mom wasn't able to take care of me because she was schizophrenic."
However, when Mike started working at Highfields in the residential treatment program he realized that his upbringing could be used as an advantage to help struggling youth.
"When kids come into the system they think that the people helping them have never been in trouble and came from good parents," said Mike. "I'm a prime example of showing them that their upbringing doesn't define them."
