Here's What's Up Next!
We've been so busy lifting up our Awakening weekend that we're hardly mentioned our next big endeavor - Explore God.This seven week evangelistic outreach starts on September 11, and continues through October 23. The most exciting part is that we'll be partnering with scores of Richmond churches, taking up the same topics each week, and joining in cooperative publicity, specifically seeking to connect with young adults - i.e., lots of social media and billboards. You may have already seen some of this publicity.
The topics we'll address in sermons and small groups during those seven weeks are:
Does life have a purpose?
Is there a God?
Why does God allow pain and suffering?
Is Christianity too narrow?
Is Jesus really God?
Is the Bible reliable?
Can I know God personally?
What's your part? Pray for those who don't know Jesus to meet him. And bring someone with you to a small group or worship! Whom might you invite?

Our El
ders m
et on Monday, and didn't even get to complete their business for all of the discussing they did about our Awakening weekend, and because they got to welcome some new members to St. Giles. (They'll finish their work next Monday.)

Kevin Schutte |
|
One of our new members is suddenly family to us because he's family to one of our Pastors, Sarah Marsh. Kevin Schutte married Sarah in July, and they will be celebrating their marriage with worship here on September 17 (see the accompanying invitation). Kevin is a project manager for SunTrust. He's also a musician - he even did service with the Marine Corps Band! His daughter, Jaycee, is often here at St. Giles with Sarah and Kevin. Welcome!
|
|
|
Nathan Varvel, Spencer Cooke, and Lola Sneddon
|
We also had the privilege of welcoming three of our teens, who are anything but new
around
here. And yet they are now among us in a new way as they completed
the
confirmation process and made their profession of faith to the Elders. Spencer Cooke is a Sophomore at Veritas. Lola Sneddon is a Freshman at Maggie Walker, and Nathan Varvel is a Sophomore at
Huguenot
. Look and
see - they're not kids anymore! And the Lord is growing them and using them marvelously. Welcome
- in a new way!
Kevin, Spencer, Lola, and Nathan will profess their faith publicly during worship on September 11.

Wondering About the Organ?
Y

We expect to have it going soon!

How serious am I about "Race and the Church"?
Saturday, September 19, 2016, 9 AM to 11 AM
at West End Presbyterian Church
9008 Quioccasin Road, Richmond 23229,
Carl Ellis will address "Our Behavior Matters: Are We Behaving Like the Church or the World?" His wife Karen Ellis' topic is "Welcome to the Margins: What the Evangelical Church can learn from Persecuted Christians". Their biographies are at
raceandthechurch.com.
I, Beth York, ask myself how much has really changed since this statement in 1970?
"The role of Christianity has been firmly established in relationship to oppressive institutional forces...many blacks have been made to feel that Christianity is synonymous with dehumanization of blacks and the perpetuation of white domination".
from Your God is too White by C. Salley and R. Beam.
Can Christ followers fulfill Reconciliation in Richmond? Let's think, weep and pray so!
