A Message from the Dean...
How Long Can you Keep your Feet in a Bucket of Ice Water?
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses . . .
let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us. -Hebrews 12:1

I have been taking immersion Spanish for two years now. Understand that this is two years of classes twice a week, two hours per day, with homework. I have never missed a class just because I didn't feel like going. The reason I have not missed any classes? Because Varita and I are taking classes together. It's amazing how much more motivated we can be when someone is with us encouraging us on.
Serving at the Cathedral and in this neighborhood has its challenges and trials. There are times when the work is hard and there is so much that needs to be done. We all need encouragement. Did you know that encouragement can not only have an impact on us emotionally, but mentally and physically as well?
Several years ago I read about an experiment that was done to measure people's capacity to endure pain. In this experiment numerous barefooted persons sat in a room with their bare feet in a bucket of ice water. Half the individuals were left in the room by themselves and told to keep their feet in the bucket of ice water for as long as they could, while the other half had a person in the room with them encouraging them to keep their feet in the cold icy bucket longer. The researchers found that when there was someone offering encouragement and support the participant was able to tolerate the pain twice as long as when no one else was present. Amazing.
The more amazing thing is that we as Christians are not alone in our earthly pilgrimage. Hebrews tells us that we are "surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses" who are encouraging us on.
In the Creed we say that we believe in the "communion of saints." That's what that means. We are not alone in our spiritual journey, but those faithful people are surrounding us, encouraging us in our earthly pilgrimage. Remember that next time you get in a tough place: you are not alone.
