THE COMPOST CORNER
Q. A very bright UC Berkeley student (Full disclosure: my grandson - hz) just asked:
By separating out organic matter from our landfill due to Napa's excellent Curbside Composting program, are we slowing down the breakdown of the other material in the landfill?
A.
Indeed a very bright question...
The decomposition that takes place in a landfill is pretty inexact - modern landfills are constructed to prevent odors, runoff, etc. The idea is that they are supposed to inhibit materials from breaking down.
Decomposition does happen, often in the first few days
of organic matter being disposed of (before it's sealed away in the landfill for good) and then over the long period of time that the stuff is buried. As we know, decomposition in a landfill not a good thing - it generates methane, a greenhouse gas 20-30 times as powerful as carbon dioxide...

ANOTHER ADVENTURE FOR CanDo VOLUNTEERS
October
13-15
Help support CanDo's bottom line by volunteering to pour wine/beer or cashier at the
Safeway Open. This PGA golf tour has attracted some of golf's luminaries and it's attracted CanDo, too. We were honored to be asked by Silverado Country Club to help out as the first Napa Valley nonprofit outside the field of education. Now Community Resources for Children is involved, too. Good company.
While we're contributing as volunteers, Silverado will provide a generous contribution to CanDo at the close of the event. Safeway, the tournament sponsor, has also said that a million dollars from proceeds will be distributed to area nonprofits.
WHAT'S REQUIRED OF VOLUNTEERS? On each of three days, CanDo will cover two 3.5 hour shifts with eight volunteers for each shift. That's a lot of coverage. As a result, we're asking each volunteer to sign-up for two (or more) shifts. Whether your shifts are both on the same day or on two different days is up to you. On each day you volunteer, you'll receive a pass to enjoy the tournament when you're not working. There are also concerts each of our three nights.
A TIPS OR RBS CARD IS ALSO REQUIRED (certifying that you've been trained in how to pour alcohol). If you already have a card, great. Don't have one? No problem. Seven local two hour trainings will be offered for free in September. Or you may choose to complete an on-line training for which you'll need to self-pay (about $13). Your certification is good for three years.
We'll be wearing basic black shoes with shorts or slacks and working in a tent. Aprons and polo shirts will be provided.
Let's fill-up these slots!
Invite friends and neighbors to join in the action.
We're trying a new sign-up system through SignUpGenius.com. Please click
here to select your shifts and let us know if you run into any trouble.

The Choices We Make
Napa Valley CanDo seeks to inspire and facilitate action
by alerting interested Valley residents about opportunities for service. If you participate as a volunteer in an activity that you learned about through Napa Valley CanDo, whether initiated by CanDo or another organization, please take personal responsibility for your involvement. Use common sense. Only you can determine whether an activity is a good
fit, that is to say
compatible with your interests and abilities.
