Teaching children to read since 2003!

Summer 2016 Newsletter

I hope you had a wonderful summer and enjoyed some summer reading while spending time with your family and friends. Reading Power is preparing for our 14th year of tutoring in North Chicago and our third year tutoring in Zi on. We will be expanding our North Chicago prekindergarten program (from two to six classrooms) this year after last year's successful pilot program. Our students continue to make great literacy strides while learning and growing  alongside their volunteer tutors. We are excited to welcome back our returning tutors, to welcome our new volunteer tutors to the Reading Power family, and meet our new students this year.

Thank  you  to everyone - volunteers, donors, supporters, and partners - who make Reading Power possible each year.
~Rebecca Mullen, MSEd, Executive Director of Programs

Mission Statement:  Reading Power is a literacy tutoring program serving low-achieving children attending elementary schools. Our mission is to accelerate children's literacy learning and to develop in them a love of reading and writing. We accomplish this goal through an independent tutoring program working in partnership with schools. We believe that all children deserve to reach their intellectual potential.

Our Reading Power room is hugged each and every day by our dedicated volunteer tutors". ~ Marla Guziec, Forrestal Site Coordinator

Tutor applications can be completed on our website here .

Our greatest needs for new volunteer tutors are for our afternoon program at Forrestal Elementary School tutoring kindergarten students (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons) and for our prekindergarten program expansion at Green Bay Early Childhood Center  (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings). We also have openings for our 1st and 2nd grade morning programs at Forrestal and North Elementary Schools in North Chicago (Monday - Friday mornings) and at Beulah Park Elementary School in Zion (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings).

Reading Power Impact
Summer offers Reading Power a bit of time to reflect on our past year and prepare for the next. The analysis of our student data is always exciting. This shows us that all the hard work by our students and tutors has an impact. The combination of the curricula and our wonderful tutors accelerates our students' learning compared to their classmates. This helps our students reach their intellectual potential, become active problem solvers, and more confident learners in and out of the classroom.
~Kathy McFarland, PhD, CEO and Board Chairman

The Lake County Community Foundation Grant
Reading Power is honored to announce that The Lake County Community Foundation has provided a generous grant to support our Zion program. Our donors make a vital difference in students' lives by supplying funding to support one-to-one interventions to our students before they have a chance to fail.
Lake Forest Day Parade
A big thank YOU to all our Reading Power tutors who marched in the Lake Forest Day parade with us! It was a wonderful, hot day to recruit new tutors.

Affiliations and Testimonials
As a nonprofit organization, we are often applying for grants, seeking out new donations, and sharing our story with new constituents. We have created two Google Forms to collect your affiliations and/or volunteer tutor testimonials. The affiliation form will ask about your connections to local organizations, faith-based communities, and civic memberships. The testimonial form is to share any of your Reading Power stories from tutoring throughout the year. If you click on the links, the forms are easy to complete and the information is invaluable to us. Thank you!
