Did you know that you are running your very own drug lab? Yes YOU!

The human body produces its own opiates, called endorphins (for endogenous morphine), that are peptides. Like the poppy-derived opiates that they structurally resemble, endorphins influence mood and perception of pain!

If you know all about this already, skip to paragraph 5! If you care to know... the discovery of endorphins began in 1971 in research laboratories at Stanford University and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where researchers exposed pieces of brain tissue from experimental mammals to morphine. The morphine was radioactively labeled (some of the atoms were radioactive isotopes) so researchers could follow its destination in the brain.

The morphine indeed bound to receptors on the membranes of certain nerve cells, particularly in the neurons that transmit pain. Could a mammal's body manufacture its own opiates? Over the next few years, researchers identified several types of endorphins in the human brain and associated their release with situations involving pain relief.

What does this have to do with yoga you say?! And here's the BEST news we have: Yoga brings you into a naturally elevated state of mind and body, essentially into your NATURAL HIGH.

You don't have to negatively impact your joints or ingest any substance to get intensely good feelings. YOUR body is designed to feel electric, alight, joyful, happy...and it's all natural and waiting to happen! We recommend hot yoga as often as you can, to send you on your way to health and deeper happiness.

It's still summer, get some down time! We commend you for efforts that you put forth for your beloved family, friends and neighbours and for those in need. And, we say please keep on creating time for yourself to relax, read, do yoga - things that nourish your spirit.

Thanks for a few minutes of your precious time here inside this newsletter! We have a powerful Seminar coming up, a cleaning shut down that you need to know about, and a sneak preview at our 2016 Fall Schedule!

Community Classes are every Friday at 6pm and are By Donation. During the months of August and September we'll be aimed at collecting funds for the Our Place Society.

Until we see you again please take care of YOU - and your lab!

Namaste

This seminar combines Yoga with the traditional recovery tools (12 steps) to offer a more holistic mind, body and spirit approach to addictive tendencies and self destructive behaviors. A path of healing will be presented for many of life's challenges such as anxiety, co-dependency, trauma, grief, stress, eating disorders, chronic illness, burnout.

Yoga of Recovery is for anyone who is interested in a holistic, more complete view of the problem and it's solution. It links the West (12 steps) with the East (Yoga) together for those who wish to embark on a more comprehensive program of recovery.

Yoga of Recovery provides a deeper understanding of emotional sobriety, wellness and sustained spiritual development. This seminar is for counselors, social workers, sponsors, yoga teachers, yoga enthusiasts and anyone who wishes to heal and replenish their spirit.

Please bring a yoga mat if you have one, one large towel (two if you wish to shower after class), water, any props that you like to use, and pen / paper for notes. A handout will also be provided to take notes. Yoga mats can be rented for $2.

Yoga Loft Teacher Spotlight

Q & A with Erin Price

When did you start yoga, and why?
At the age of 25 I got into running and weight training along with a connection to self development books/programs and balanced nutrition.  The piece that was missing for me was spiritual and from feeling a deeper connection to knowing there was something more.  One morning when I got back from my run, I found a Yoga with Padma show on tv.  I am a firm believer in intuition and the flow of the universe, nothing happens by mistake...so I began these 30 minute sessions of an introduction to the philosophy, meditation and asanas each day after my run.  It wasn't long before I put down the weights and started deeper into my path of yoga.

How long have you been teaching yoga?
I have been teaching yoga for 5 years now. I completed my 200 hour training with Dan Clement, Lauren Hanna Roegele and Carol Wray in July 2011 as well as my Kids and Family Yoga with Rainbow Kids.  My passion led me to Power Vinyasa Training with Clara Roberts-Oss and eventually to Leanne Kitteridge of Shibui Yoga to complete my 300 hour Therapeutics training in 2013.

What motivated you to become a yoga Teacher?
The first time I took a conscious breath in a public class and felt the collective energy, I knew undeniably the healing that goes on for people on the mat and the beauty in the connection in community.  It is so sacred and something that got lost along the way in society with all of the social platforms diminishing that true love and connection.  It is so vital to human growth to feel connected beyond the noses on our faces or the screens in front of them.  I want to raise my daughters knowing that they can make a difference in the world and that it begins with them making conscious decisions.

How have you benefited through practicing yoga?
Yoga in all it's forms has taught me so much.  To breathe, to simply be in the moment, that everything in life is impermanent, that love is always the answer, that I am you and you are me....together we are one.  We only have this one home, and we need to come together for the greater good and be kind and compassionate.  I have learned the ways of a householder and that sometimes my yoga consists of snuggling with my daughters reading a book or packing their lunches or walking on the beach.  Every action in life is yoga, if done with love and an offering.  It all becomes meaningful.

What is your favourite part of teaching?
Creating space for people to step into the best versions of themselves.  To hold space for people to show up and be who they are and know that they are perfect as they are on their journey.  I love people, I love connection and I love to know that maybe I have contributed something to people's well being.

Have there been any hurdles, with practicing and/or teaching and if so what?
Oh gosh where to begin there?...... Certainly the question of am I enough? Why would people want to come take my class?  Self defeating self talk comes up at times.  Teaching too much and not practicing .... trying too hard to be a "Yogi" because as a teacher we hold a certain level of standard.  End of the day though, I am reminded that we are all just humans doing our best to find our way home and we will cause harm along the way, have expectations that crush us and be disappointed.  It is what we choose to learn from those experiences and our capacity to forgive and ask for forgiveness.

What is your favourite yoga pose right now?
My practice has really slowed down these days.  My daily practice / Sadhana is early morning ritual and reading yoga text.  I do a few Yin poses and then practice my Pranayama and Meditation.  I like the poses that create freedom in my body.  Range of motion through my hips and spine is most important to me right now.

What keeps you coming back to yoga always?
It is my path, my Dharma.  To alleviate suffering in the mind and body and be the best version of myself. To remain accountable and loving in all that I do.

In all that I have studied, experienced and practiced what I do know, is that I have just scratched the surface.

I invite you to always remain open, curious and receptive.  Always be a student and I pray that you never have all of the answers....until of course you reach enlightenment at which time you might just float away ;)

Love, blessings and pranams,

Erin
