NFF Chalktalk - Aug. 22, 2016
Harry Gilmer, a 1993 College Football Hall of Fame inductee from Alabama, passed away Aug. 20. At 90 years old, he was the seventh-oldest living Hall of Fame player. Celebrated for his "jump pass," he held numerous Alabama career records when he left the Crimson Tide, and many of his marks went unbroken for decades. Gilmer holds the distinction as the only Alabama player to finish in the top five of Heisman Trophy balloting twice.
The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the NFF announced that they will partner for the third consecutive year to conduct t he FWAA-NFF Super 16 Poll , the organizations' weekly major-college football poll. The results will be  released by 11:30 a.m. ET each Sunday  of the regular 2016 season, and the plans include a preseason poll. The NFF also announced the schedule for the poll's release and the 2016 poll voters.
2016 College Football Season Kicks Off This Week
The 2016 college football season officially kicks off this week! The NAIA gets its season started on Thursday with a full slate of games during the weekend. 

Then on Friday, California and Hawaii meet in the first FBS game of the season in Sydney, Australia. The game will kick off at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN and will feature Allen Bestwick, College Football Hall of Fame coach Mike Bellotti and Warren Smith on the broadcast.

The FCS season kicks off Saturday as Charleston Southern travels to the Fargodome to take on five-time defending national champion North Dakota State. The game will air on ESPN at 7:30 p.m. ET and feature Adam Amin, Mack Brown and Molly McGrath on the broadcast.
2016 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Nominations
Nomination forms for the NFF's coveted National Scholar-Athlete Awards, presented by Fidelity Investments, have been sent to collegiate sports information directors. The deadline for submissions will be Wednesday, Aug. 31.

Eligible candidates must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility; have a cumulative 3.2 GPA (undergrad); be a starter or significant contributor; and have outstanding leadership and citizenship. Official transcripts as well as a head shot and action photo of the nominee are required.

Each member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. One honoree will be selected as the winner of the NFF 
William V. Campbell Trophy , presented by Fidelity Investments, and will have his scholarship increased to $25,000. All members of the class will be honored guests at the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on Dec. 6.

Aug. 29, College Football Hall of Fame Golf Classic-  The Hall will host its second annual golf classic at Eastlake Golf Course in Atlanta on Monday, Aug. 29. Participating golfers will get the chance to play in a fivesome with a Hall of Famer. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. ET and tee time will start promptly at 9 a.m. The Hall will host an awards luncheon immediately following the tournament where prizes will be given to the first, second and third place winners. Aug. 30, Kickoff to Playoff Luncheon- The 2016 Kickoff to Playoff Luncheon brought to you by the College Football Hall of Fame and Chick-fil-A Fan Experience, the Atlanta Sports Council and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl will take place on the Hall's indoor football field on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 11:30 a.m. ET. Hear from College Football Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock and other sports industry leaders on the new college playoff system and the upcoming season. Special Exhibit: Fans can continue to experience a limited-engagement exhibit at the Hall, delivered by UPS, "All-Star Saturdays: A Century of America's Best." NFF Board Member and Dallas Cowboys owner, president and general manager Jerry Jones was selected by the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Contributors Committee as finalists for the Class of 2017.

NFL Network's new season of the Emmy-nominated series, A Football Life, will feature NFF Board Member and College Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman (UCLA), Hall of Famers Jim Brown (Syracuse) and Pat Tillman (Arizona State) and Hall of Famer and 1983 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Steve Young (BYU). Others who will be featured include former players Brett Favre (Southern Miss), Kevin Greene (Auburn) and Curtis Martin (Pittsburgh).

College Football Hall of Famer Zach Thomas will become the newest member of the Texas Tech Football Ring of Honor Oct. 22 prior to the Red Raiders game against Oklahoma.

Decalon Brooks, the son of 2016 College Football Hall of Fame electee Derrick Brooks, has orally committed to play football at his father's alma mater Florida State.

2016 College Football Hall of Fame electee Marlin Briscoe (Nebraska Omaha) will be honored with the 2016 Tom Osborne Leadership Award Sept. 25 at the seventh annual Tom Osborne Leadership Award Banquet at the Lochland Country Club in Hastings, Neb.

College Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown will be honored by the Syracuse University Alumni Association with the 2016 Arents Award Sept. 16 in the Goldstein Auditorium at the Schine Student Center. The award is the highest alumni honor bestowed by the university.

College Football Hall of Famer Kenny Easley (UCLA) was selected as the Senior Finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2017.

West Virginia will retire No. 77 in honor of the late College Football Hall of Famer Bruce Bosley during its season opener against Missouri Sept. 3.

Crowley High School (Texas) will name the field at its football stadium in honor of College Football Hall of Famer Gary Reasons (Northwestern State) during its game on Aug. 26.

FOX Sports unveiled its full lineup of college football game and studio broadcasters, which includes College Football Hall of Famer Chris Spielman (Ohio State).

College Football Hall of Fame coach Lloyd Carr will step down from the College Football Playoff selection committee due to health issues.

The home of College Football Hall of Fame coach Jake Gaither was named to the National Register of Historic Places.

2015 NFF National Scholar-Athlete E.K. Binns (Navy) was named to the 2015-16 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.

2009 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Joe Pawelek is one of five who will be honored as Baylor Football Legends during select 2016 home football games. The other four players are Steve Grumbine, Jordan Lake, Jason Smith and John Westbrook.

ESPN College GameDay, the 2006 recipient of the NFF Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award, will kick off the 2016 season live from Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis., on Saturday, Sept. 3, for the LSU-Wisconsin game.
Over The Middle
The Nebraska Football Hall of Fame, which is sponsored by the NFF Nebraska Chapter , will hold its 2016 induction dinner  on the University of Nebraska campus on Sept. 9. The class will be introduced prior to Nebraska's game with Wyoming on Sept. 10. This year's class includes former Huskers Kris BrownAdam CarrikerScott Raridon and Dean Sukup and former Doane (Neb.) player Fred Davis.

The NFF Tom Lombardo/St. Louis Chapter will host its annual Paul Savage Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament on Sept. 11 at Columbia Golf Club in Columbia, Ill. Proceeds from the tournament go toward the chapter's scholarship program. The chapter will then host its first luncheon of the season Sept. 14 at Lombardo's-Airport restaurant longtime St. Louis Post-Dispatch sports writer Jim Thomas.

The NFF Sacramento Valley (Calif.) Chapter featured 17 high school coaches, two community college head coaches and Sacramento State head coach Jody Sears at its annual kickoff breakfast on Aug. 21. Incoming chapter president John Volek welcomed the coaches, who each provided a short preview of their respective upcoming seasons.

Launched in 2008, the NFF Scholar-Athlete Alumni Association provides a powerful vehicle for past honorees to remain in the vanguard of the NFF's present efforts.
