A MESSAGE FROM OUR PTSA PRESIDENT, JILL SURACE
As the Incoming PVPHS Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) President for 2016-2017, I want to share with you the PTSA theme for next year - Celebrate Learning Everyday! Our vibrant students are educated and engaged by a wonderful faculty and support staff on a daily basis. As parents, sometimes we forget that learning naturally occurs daily, not just in our students' lives, but in our own lives as well. Reflecting and discussing experiences of the day with your student is a great stress reliever for all members of the family. As such, PVPHS and the PTSA are recommending a terrific summer reading book for parents called "How to Raise an Adult" by Julie Lythcott-Haims, the former Dean of Freshman at Stanford University. This relevant tome is a deeply honest and compassionate discussion of the dynamics between parent and child, and how the relationship changed beginning in the late 1990s. Each subsequent year, Dean Lythcott-Haims observed an increasing number of college students who were poorly equipped to handle the demands of adult and college life. Her life's work is now dedicated to educating parents on changing certain behaviors early in order to encourage the adult to emerge from childhood successfully. Julie Lythcott-Haims will be visiting PVPHS the evening of Tuesday, September 6th and we are excited to be able to co-sponsor such a dynamic speaker for our community. Her discussion will focus, not just on the current high school student, but really the entire K - 12 spectrum. For more information on Lythcott-Haims, visit her website www.howtoraiseanadult.com    and on YouTube. I look forward to a fabulous 2016-2017 school year. In the meantime, enjoy the remaining days of your summer vacation!

PTSA SPONSORS BEST SELLING AUTHOR OF
"HOW TO RAISE AN ADULT"
The PTSA is delighted to co-sponsor an exciting speaker event at PVPHS the evening of Tuesday, September 6th from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm in the Main Gym.  Author Julie Lythcott-Haims, the former Dean of Freshmen at Stanford University, will be discussing her New York Times best-seller, "How to Raise an Adult".  All are welcomed to hear a truly distinguished speaker/author discuss her direct experiences with students, and educate parents on how to encourage the adult to emerge successfully from childhood.  The program is free for the entire community, and we recommend all K-12 parents come hear the observations of Ms. Lythcott-Haims; it will be a life-changing event!  Seating is limited and you must register in order to attend.  CLICK HERE   for more information about this unique evening at PVPHS and reserve your tickets to this event online through EventBrite here. You can read some of Ms. Lythcott-Haims' ideas here.

PARTICIPATION DONATIONS SUSTAIN OUR SPORTS AND EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAMS
The District provides $650,000 to cover coaching, extracurricular, and academic stipends for the 2016-2017 school year.  The total cost of our Athletic/Extracurricular programs is close to one million dollars.  Each year we turn to our families for support to cover the unfunded portion of these valuable programs.

The suggested participation donations for the  2016-2017 school year will, as always, be calculated based on the number of students participating in the activities, the events scheduled for the activities, and the cost of officiating, competition fees, and transportation. Each activity will have a different suggested amount based on these variables.  While the suggested participation donation is not mandatory, it is needed in order to keep all programs viable.
As always, the student's involvement in any given activity will not be curtailed or increased based upon any donation.  The donation, whether made or not made, will be completely confidential, known only by the Student Store, and will never be shared with the coaching staff or activities advisors.  The coaches/advisors will only be made aware of the bottom line so that he/she can make prudent financial decisions regarding his/her program(s).

To go through Athletic or Activity Registration/Clearance, please go to the PVPHS Website's Athletic and Activity Clearance page.  Fill out the information and follow the instructions.  The 2016-17 amounts for each sport/activity are here If you have questions, please email Jeanne Shiosaki at [email protected]

In closing, I am so grateful for your continued support and commitment to Peninsula High.  Asking for money is the very worst part of my job but you have always responded graciously and generously.

PEN HIGH HAZING PLEDGE
Please note that all students and their parents are required to sign the Peninsula High Hazing Pledge (see athletic packet) before students can participate in sports or activities.  Please give the completed form to your coach or adviser.  PLEDGE

Please visit pvphsabc.com to see the many ways that you can help. THANK YOU PENINSULA EDUCATION FOUNDATION
I encourage Peninsula High parents to support the Peninsula Education Foundation. PEF will donate $3.5 million to PVPUSD again this year, with $1.3 million of their pledge to the district supporting additional teaching positions. This level of funding not only helps us achieve academic excellence in our enire district, but also affects our school significantly:
PEF supports our Counseling Department. Their funding allows three additional academic counselors at Peninsula High School! More academic counselors keep student-to-counselor ratios manageable. Statewide funding ratios are close to 1000 to1; with PEF funding our ratios are approximately 300 to 1. Lower ratios allow counselors to better manage each student's coursework plan with a focus on promoting academic success and achieving benchmarks required for graduation and college admissions. Plus, PEF funds our Safe School Counselor, Christine Lopez; who is available to all students each day.

PEF provides funding for our College Career Center (CCC) staff Terri Lewallen, College Career Center Director and Julie Arico, Financial Aid and Scholarship Advisor. They guide students through the college application process, including test prep, finding the right college, career assessments, as well as arrange college information nights and college visits to campus. The CCC is crucial to student success, and without PEF's funding it would not exist.
PEF is committed to STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and supports our award winning SMERT program with fundingfor supplies, equipment and competition fees as well as sponsoring the High School Science Fair.

PEF will award a $1500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Peninsula High School, plus they will continue administering the Jack Bagdasar scholarship of $250.
Please take a moment to donate to PEF. You can pledge now and pay later. Visit their website at www.pvpef.org, email [email protected] or call 310.378.2278.
Mark your calendars now, to join me on Sunday, October 25th for the Skechers Friendship Walk in Manhattan Beach. Proceeds benefit the local education foundations. Last year, PEF received $240,000 from this event.

ALL EYES ON PENINSULA HIGH FOOTBALL
Our revitalized football team has been in the news this summer! Check out this Daily Breeze article about the team and this PV News article about all of our new coaches.

Thank you for continuing to believe in Panther Football, despite the difficult decision to suspend the season last fall. From those darkest days, the roar has been restored thanks to the leadership and commitment of our new head coach, David Young. Since January, David Young has been building the Panther rosters, one student at a time, and we are thrilled to be fielding teams that have more than doubled in size.

Thank you to our players for never giving up! Your Panther community believes in you and stands firmly behind you. We will be there for you, win or lose! In fact, on September 16, many Panther Football Alumni will be at our game to support you and to celebrate the resurgence of the Peninsula High School Football Program.

Thank you also, to Freshman Coach Larry Campbell for his incredible efforts in building our freshman team with numbers that we have not seen in years. His positive attitude and belief in Panther Football is unsurpassed.

Coach Young has selected an incredible coaching staff that includes; Francesco Vaccara, Matt Redlew, Troy Dillon, James Santos, Larry Campbell, Rick Smith, Chris Duffy, and John Hangartner. Peninsula High is lucky to have coaches who are not only dedicated and talented, but serve as wonderful role models.

I would like to extend a special thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers. Your dedication and "Panther Spirit" is truly remarkable. After all the anticipation and preparation throughout the summer, Panther Football is ready to meet the challengers! Let's hear the band, the cheers, the roar of the crowd....football season is almost here!
Thank you all for believing!
Go Panthers!

What is the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP)?
The Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) is the Local Control Funding Formula's (LCFF) vehicle for transparency and engagement. The LCAP is the primary means through which PVPUSD can share performance data, needs, actions, and anticipated outcomes that will guide the use of available LCFF funding. Beginning in 2014-15, each school district is responsible to create a three-year LCAP. PVPUSD utilizes the LCAP to describe the annual goals for all students including students in the following categories; limited-income, English learners, and foster youth. The LCAP committee provides the mechanism for staff, parents, and community members to provide input into the overall development of the LCAP document.

PEN DUO NAMED NATIONAL CHAMPIONS IN DEBATE
Raam Tambe and Jerry Wang were named National Champions in Policy Debate during the 2016 National Speech and Debate Tournament held June 12-17 in Salt Lake City Utah.
Raam and Jerry

The National Speech and Debate Association is the largest interscholastic speech and debate organization serving middle, high school, and collegiate students in the United States.  Each year, more than 150,000 students from more than 3,000 schools participate in smaller district competitions across the country, vying for a coveted spot at the National Tournament.  Champions are crowned in 13 main events, and thousands of dollars in college scholarships are awarded annually.

In a message from Executive Director, J. Scott Wunn, "In light of this outstanding achievement by Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, I am honored to present you with an engraved plaque for your office.  Thank you for embracing the National Speech and Debate Association and our ongoing mission to give youth a voice!  Together, we are empowering students like yours to become engaged citizens, skilled professionals, and honorable leaders in our society."

Congratulations to Raam and Jerry for not only winning at the National competition, but also the State competition earlier in the year.  Thank you to our coaches and the Friends of Speech and Debate for supporting the program.

TEEN COURT PROGRAM HONORED
The Los Angeles Superior Court Teen Court Program has been awarded the 2016 Education Pipeline Award from the State Bar of California.

In a letter from Judge David S. Wesley, Peninsula High and the other 36 schools who offer program were acknowledged for their dedication and passion to further social justice for the youth of Los Angeles County which has resulted in the Los Angeles Superior Court receiving this great honor.  The collaborative effort to reduce recidivism and encourage juvenile offenders to take responsibly for their actions and teaching our student jurors about civic responsibility, has contributed greatly to a new way of thinking about the juvenile justice system.

Each Teen Court session, in the 37 high schools, makes history and provides the offenders, student jurors and audience with the opportunity to learn about justice, equality, property rights and liberty. In addition, we afford youth a unique opportunity to interact regularly with judicial officers, probation officers, interpreters, attorneys, law students and other professionals which otherwise might be unattainable.
Last year, Peninsula High's Teen Court program won the California State Civic Engagement Award.  If you are interested in being a part of Teen Court, contact advisor Logan Tootell at [email protected]
