July Chapter Meeting & Luncheon
 Monday July 14 , 2014
11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Omni Fort Worth Hotel | 1300 Houston Street

Presented By:
Rachel Muir, CFRE
When she was just 26 years old, Rachel Muir launched Girlstart, a non-profit organization to empower girls in math, science, engineering and technology in the living room of her apartment with $500 and a credit card.  Several years later she had raised over 10 million dollars and was featured on Oprah, CNN, and the Today show.  Her career spans includes leading an online fundraising consulting practice at Convio/Blackbaud and managing major gift portfolios for some of the country's largest and most successful nonprofit brands.  Rachel serves as Vice President of Training at Pursuant, where she leads classroom and custom training to transform people into confident, successful fundraisers.

Program:
The Economic Gold Mine of Donor Loyalty
Retaining donors is where fundraising profit is made, however most organizations lose two out of three donors after the first gift.  In a recent study 69% of nonprofits said they do not or don't know if they have a strategy for maintaining donor loyalty.  Why are we losing so many donors?  What can we do to prevent it?  What do donors want?  How can we best maximize our fundraising efforts?  Discover trends in philanthropy that can drastically impact your fundraising performance.  We'll explore why donors stop giving, how to measure donor retention and how to apply a donor centered cultivation plan to a calendar.  You'll learn how to make the donor the hero of your story and inspiring stewardship examples that can help you guarantee a long term future with your donors.

  President's Message

Summer is here!  As I prepared this message earlier this month, the rain was falling...such a welcome sight and sound for our parched earth. I know the plants were soaking up the rain in anticipation of a Texas summer.

One way we always know summer is close is our DFW Philanthropy Conference, held on Friday, June 13. The conference committee worked long and hard on this event.  Thank you to conference chair Nancy Swartz who along with co-chair Jan Murfield, CFRE, assembled a talented group of volunteers from both the Fort Worth Metro and Greater Dallas chapters.  The turnout was fantastic and the group seemed to really enjoy the extensive menu of educational opportunities. Look for Nancy's highlights from the conference in the August newsletter.

Something to think about, if you know an under 30 fundraiser tell them about the Young Professional membership category.

YOUNG PROFESSIONAL - $75 (including chapter dues) -

  • Young Professional: Open to persons who hold some degree of responsibility directly for fundraising, work within the U.S. and Canada and are compensated for their services, and are 30 years old or younger, must subscribe to the AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards and its bylaws and promote the Donor Bill of Rights and be employed, or have been employed by an organization that provides benefits to society.

Another membership category is the nonprofit organization member (small) which has the benefit that the membership belongs to the organization and not the individual.

Nonprofit Organizational Membership - Small - $150.00 (Including chapter dues)

Open to nonprofit organizations who can answer yes to all the following criteria:

  1. An operating budget of less than $1,000,000
  2. A fundraising department with less than two (2) Full time equivalent (FTE) staff
  3. Individually incorporated or otherwise organized as a separate entity in the laws of the specific country; and
  4. Not affiliated with a larger institution supporting their operations.

If you have questions on membership opportunities, please contact our recruitment director LaToyia Dennis, at [email protected].

As always, thank you for your involvement with the Fort Worth Metro Chapter and I look forward to seeing everyone at the July 14th luncheon.

Opening the door to major gifts

Mastering the discovery call

While there are many great resources on the solicitation or "ask," the knowledge base of the "discovery" call - the very beginnings of the major gift relationship - are quite limited. John Greenhoe, author of the best-selling book "Opening the Door to Major Gifts" (Charity Channel Press, 2013), will delve into this all important topic in this AFP webinar. Using John's proven methods, participants will learn basic but effective methods for qualifying prospects for the purpose of major gift cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will:
  • Understand effective methods for researching their major gift prospects - so that the first call isn't "cold"
  • Know how various contact means (email, phone, postal mail) can be used strategically to set up the first meeting
  • Understand models for scripting the initial visit, or knowing what to say during a casual but purposeful meeting, and
  • Understand ways to continue to conversation beyond the first call, and rising trends that will affect discovery calls in the near future

Target Audience: Entry and mid-level fundraisers
Instructor: John Greenhoe, CFRE
