Today there are more than 2 million nonprofits competing for our collective hearts and minds. Many have compelling causes worthy of support. So why do so many fail? The answers lie in the increasingly sophisticated and dynamic world of digital friend- and fundraising. How do you find people who will care about what you're doing? How do you engage them in your efforts, your activities, your events? Get them to share? To advocate? To donate? Ruth Fitzgibbons and Elizabeth Clayton, from The Richards Group's cause branding practice, will explore these questions and more.

Elizabeth Clayton

Before joining The Richards Group, where she specializes in nonprofit branding, Elizabeth Clayton spent six years at United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, where she worked with C-suite corporate executives creating year-round engagement plans for their employees. The result: $25 million raised for 90-plus nonprofits in the Dallas community. Elizabeth also helped create a national program for young professionals across the United Way of America system.

Ruth Fitzgibbons

Ruth FitzGibbons became the public relations guru for The Richards Group in 1994. She has grown the PR discipline from one employee and one client to its current size of 25 crack professionals serving more than 40 companies, institutions, and organizations. She has served as editor and writer for New York magazine, The New York Times, Cosmopolitan, Ladies Home Journal and D Magazine. She is a member and former president of The Dallas Assembly, and a member of the Dallas chapter of the International Women's Forum.

Online registration closes on April 17, 2015 at 10 PM. After that date, register by fax, mail or email using the downloadable form posted at  www.afpdallas.org.

President's Message

Dear Friends,

Diana Marquis

The 52nd International Fundraising Conference was held in Baltimore, March 29th - 31st. Judy Wright, your President-Elect, and I attended along with a local contingent and approximately 4,000 other fundraisers from across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and around the world. I met people from the Bahamas, Killeen, and England. The Greater Dallas Chapter is a large chapter with about 400 members. We had the opportunity to meet in workshops with same size chapters such as New York City, Houston, and Los Angeles. It was so invigorating to hear what other chapters are doing with their programs, National Philanthropy Day and member benefits. An area of particular interest to me is the AFP PAC. The chair this year is from the Houston Chapter and the single issue that the PAC advocates for is the protection of the charitable deduction. Let me know if advocacy is your interest so our Chapter can be more involved. And remember, mark your calendars for the next AFP International Conferences in 2016 (Boston) and 2017 (San Francisco).

If you didn't make it to Baltimore, or even if you did, make plans to attend the 2015 DFW Philanthropy In Action Conference on June 12th at the Irving Convention Center. Every year this conference is put together by volunteers from the Dallas and Fort Worth AFP Chapters. This year, Jan Murfield from the Dallas Chapter is serving as Chair. Click here to register. There will be a broad range of workshops to attend, and the keynote and closing speakers are the icing on the cake: Penelope Burk and our very own Suzanne Smith. For those of you eligible to earn the CFRE accreditation, the CFRE Review Course will be offered prior to the Conference on June 10th and 11th. Click here for more information and to register.

And be sure to register for our monthly program meetings held on the fourth Wednesday of the month at Arlington Hall centrally located in beautiful Lee Park. On April 22nd we'll offer another phenomenal program with Ruth Fitzgibbons and Elizabeth Clayton from The Richards Group. The topic is something we all need to know more about: "Friend-raising and Fundraising in the Digital Age." Bring a friend, bring your boss. See you there!

(And for the handout from last month's program with Suzanne Smith, go to  http://goo.gl/dyuYwe.)

Sincerely,

Diana Marquis, CFRE
