Spiritual Practices
with Pastor Marcia Wakeland

Saying Yes and Saying No

"In the first post, I talked about spiritual practices being defined as a way of reformation of ones' relationship with God. A definition we Lutherans can own. The spiritual practice I want to talk about today is one named by M. Shawn Copeland in the book Practicing Our Faith. 'Learning how and when to say yes and no is a practice that is crucial in our attempt to choose life. It is an essential part of growth before, with and toward the divine.'"

The Partnership at Drugfree.org, in conjunction with the GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares, is in search of young musicians (ages 14-18) to compose or create an original song and/or music video that promotes and celebrates healthy living and/or appropriately depicts a story about drug abuse. In efforts to raise awareness of addiction and recovery, the Partnership encourages teens to submit their powerful messages of struggle, hope and triumphant healing. Fall Clergy Collegium

Tuesday November 5- Thursday November 7

St. Mark Lutheran Church, Anchorage

Ron Nitz (pastor, Resurrection Lutheran), Julia Seymour (pastor, Lutheran Church of Hope) and Jess Throlson (Director of Youth and Family Ministries, Gloria Dei)  have designed a Fall Collegium centered on youth and children's ministries.

During November's collegium, Jess and Julia will offer a refresher course on child development (emotional, intellectual, and spiritual), give instruction on making Scripture accessible to all ages, discuss how to equip parents to be the "bishops and bishopesses" of their households, demonstrate different teaching techniques, and allow for plenty of questions and answers. Bring your ideas and successes in this area as well, so that we can learn from one another.

The collegium will also, of course, allow for social and sharing time together, free "down-time," and worship time together.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

Alaska Safe Medical Alliance
Dispose of unused or expired prescription medicines at safe disposal sites.
Participate in this community effort to decrease opportunities for drug abuse and minimize accidental overdoses. Prevent the misuse of prescription drugs, especially among children.

Call 211 for more information or go to the Department of Justice Website to learn of a collection site near you.

Keep unwanted prescription medications out of the environment. Dispose of them properly. In most municipalities, prescription drugs may be safely disposed of year round and the local Police Department.
