Creative Loafing: Possibly less deadly means of getting across Tampa Bay to debut in November
We have for years wondered why getting to and from the office (St. Pete->Ybor->home sweet St. Pete) is frequently perilous and/or depressing; why is crossing the Howard Frankland Bridge nightmare fodder? (Actually, we know why: people who will be dead in 30 years don't want to pay an extra penny for a pack of gum so their grandkids don't have to own a car if they can't afford to/don't want to.)
So Tuesday's news made us particularly happy.

Creative Loafing: PAC it out: St. Pete's effort to curb outside spending in local races
Consider the rainbow flag.
Every June since he's taken office, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman has raised it above City Hall ahead of St. Pete Pride weekend.
Had he not beaten the incumbent, conservative former mayor Bill Foster - had, say, right-wing political action committees banded together to pour hundreds of thousands into the race - that emblem of equality would not fly each year. The Tampa Bay Rays stalemate might have been needlessly prolonged. There might have been no wage theft ordinance - not one with teeth, anyway. And talk of civil citations as an alternative to arrest for small amounts of marijuana? No way.

Tampa Bay Times: Daniel Ruth: Too much, too little at St. Petersburg Pier
Eventually, when the new St. Petersburg pier becomes whatever it is going to be, could we include just one more additional element?
Could we please have a plain modest edifice erected? Not too big, not too small. It would be called the Whining Wall in honor of all the cluckers, grumps and malcontents who would oppose the pier project if it was the Gardens of Versailles. Too many roses. Not enough petunias.

Amid calls for greater transparency from Mayor Rick Kriseman's administration, St. Petersburg City Council voted unanimously to spend $2.2 million to protect taxpayers from losing their investment in Midtown's Tangerine Plaza.
The city will seek to spend the money in a foreclosure auction to satisfy other lienholders in the shopping center that serves many poor residents. The city will become sole owners after the auction later this month.
