Bugle Calls
Issue No. 1022
April 2015
Bob Bugle-B-1001

Throughout the past 12 months, we've introduced or re-acquainted readers with Dr. Stephen Covey, author of the international best seller, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People."

Our first topic was appropriately, Habit 1 "Be Proactive." "As human beings, we are responsible for our own lives. Our behaviors, and the consequences of those behaviors, are a function of our decisions, not our conditions."

We've since covered Habit 2 "Begin with the End in Mind," Habit # 3 "Put First Things First," Habit 4 "Think Win-Win" and Habit # 5 "Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood."

Our main topic for April is Habit # 6, "Synergize-Principles of Creative Cooperation." Simply put, synergy means that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts; that collaboration creates solutions and opportunities that would otherwise be impossible to achieve.

Our willingness to get out of our comfort zones, to respect and truly value the opinions of others (especially when we disagree) has a direct correlation with our ability to solve problems with new and better ideas, and greatly impacts the quality of our relationships.

"7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Dr. Stephen R. Covey
Analysis by Bob Bugle

"Habits are powerful factors in our lives. Because they are consistent, often unconscious patterns, they constantly, daily, express our character and produce our effectiveness...or ineffectiveness." Dr. Covey

Dr. Covey defines a habit as the intersection of knowledge (what to do), skill (how to do it) and desire (wanting to do it). Unless all three elements are involved, a good habit will never be formed. Merely knowing what to do and having the will to do it produces ineffective results if we don't possess the necessary skills. Similarly, having the knowledge and skill but not the desire accomplishes nothing.

Effective Collaboration

7 insights for collaboration in the workplace
By Dr. Carol Goman
business-presentation.jpg One my most popular speaking topics is "Harnessing the Power of Collaboration." The topic's popularity stems from corporate clients around the world realizing that "silo mentality" and knowledge hoarding behaviors are wasting the kind of collective brainpower that could save their organization billions, or lead to the discovery of a revolutionary new process or product, or, in the current economic climate, help keep their company afloat when others are sinking!
