Reflections
|
The Church is dying! The Church has always been dying and it will continue to die and be reborn. The passing of churches which met vital needs but were unable to keep pace with a quickly shifting society will be the church's now and forever story.
In this Centennial year, we have the privilege of gathering as beneficiaries of a faithful people. Holy Covenant has deep roots of faithfulness and generosity that have nourished our spirits for decades. We are living into our calling to be a welcoming, inclusive community of love and justice that continues to challenge each of us and give us direction for our future.
Like the saints named in Hebrews 11, we are a community on pilgrimage. Our journey has not been a flawless march to the top; but it has been a faithful journey where in each generation the imagination of the members has been stirred by God and a new vision has been loosed in the land. Join us this Sunday to welcome new members who will continue to help us engage the world with new eyes and ideas.

Charlotte Pride Events, August 14-21
|

DEALING WITH CONFRONTATIONAL BEHAVIOR
We are hosting a meeting with a Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Officer on August 14th at 1 pm in the Conference Room to explore ways to effectively de-escalate tense conversations. If you have concerns about dealing with confrontational behavior, please make plans to attend. We are hosting this specifically for those who will be working in the booths at the Pride Festival, but these are skills that each of our ushers and greeters and any of you who deal with the public might value.

REUSE A SNEAKER - DONATE THOSE OLD STINKY THINGS!
The Earth Care team announces Reuse a Sneaker drive. The project, with collections of any brand sneakers that have reached the end of their useful life, recycles and transforms them into
Nike Grind, a material used in creating athletic and playground surfaces, as well as select Nike products. As you prepare for the beginning of school and fall cleaning consider a new life for your old gym shoes. Drop off your old

BACK TO SCHOOL MEANS TIME FOR
The Backpack Ministry, founded five years ago, supports hungry children at David Cox Elementary School and Morehead Academy, feeding students and younger siblings each weekend. With the help of HCUCC, University City UMC and other churches, they will expand the program to a third school. Now that school is starting back we have an opportunity to continue to help some of these children whom are our neighbors.
Each weekend the children receive backpacks complete with protein, vegetables, soup, starches, fruit, breakfast items and a snack.

SOJOURNERS CLASS
The Sojourners will be discussing Wise Giving, Chapter 7, of Robert Lupton's book,
Toxic Charity: How Churches and Charities Hurt Those They Help. There are 3 more chapters and then the class will move on to something different--another book, videos, articles, Bible study, TED Talks, other??? What suggestions might you have? All are welcome to join us on Sunday--no preparation necessary.
BOOK CLUB
Please join us at the Sharon Campus on August 22 for a discussion lead by Sue Pascucci of the book "Marriage of Opposites" by Alice Hoffman. For our September 19th meeting, we have tentatively selected William Kent Kruger's "Ordinary Grace"; discussion lead by Barbara Schneller.
SHARON ROAD PROPERTY UPDATE
The sale process for the Sharon Road property is still moving along as expected. The required community meeting as part of the rezoning process was held on Wednesday, August 3. There was good attendance from a variety of neighbors surrounding the property. Information about the proposed site plan was shared with the neighbors and feedback was taken by the design team. The next steps are for the public hearing to be scheduled at the September City Council meeting, followed by a City Council vote at their October meeting. These dates could get pushed back if further design work is requested or required from the planning and zoning department. If you have questions about this sale process, feel free to contact Robbie Furr, Consistory Chair (704-453-9042) or Renee Brown, Long Range Planning committee Chair (704-996-5378).
HCUCC NURSERY/PRESCHOOL REQUESTS
Many of our little ones are having their first birthdays! We need some items to keep them entertained and safe while playing.
-Pool noodles- to use as toddler proof door stoppers---no smashed fingers! and no slammed doors :)
-Beach sand toys-shovels, rakes, molds, sifters, cars and trucks...things for our sand box.
-Outdoor toys- sturdy ones like Little Tyke or Step 2 brands, to ride on or climb...toddler age appropriate items.
Gently used contributions welcomed. See Caryn in the preschool or Dawn in the office.

Gifts from Artist Guild in Appreciation

The Kindred Spirits Art Guild is a cloth doll artist guild and club with members which range from beginners to advanced doll makers and designers. They meet monthly at the Harris Campus, to create their beautiful hand made crafts, and in appreciation of their use of the church facility, have made this generous contribution of diapers and formula offered to
Bottles N Bottoms, a local organization that provides important necessities for newborns and toddlers.
Thank you to both organizations for their wonderful outreach to the local communities!
