August, 2016

Dear Friends,

Greetings! As summer winds down, we are all getting back to routines and schedules. Don't forget to schedule fun this fall and connect with your neighbors. The Carnegie Center is looking forward to a busy season as our calendar is full of community and private events. Scroll through our fall activities, and register for any event or receive more information by emailing [email protected]

We have started planning for our fall community party and would love your help. Email us to join a committee or volunteer at the party; [email protected]. We'd love to hear your creative ideas.

In addition, we will begin some important building updates and maintenance, thanks to a generous grant. Look for information in upcoming newsletters about how we are improving and sustaining our historic architectural treasure!

Robin Hood
Sunday, October 16, 2:00pm

Good and evil take center stage in this tale of a legendary outlaw who robs from the rich to give to the poor. Robin Hood and his merry band of underground heroes rally to support those who cannot fight for themselves. But when they run afoul of the greedy Prince John, the deceptive Sheriff of Nottingham devises an elaborate plot to discover Robin's hideout and capture him once and for all. Full of sword fights and wordplay, this decidedly modern take on the classic story is a high-powered, action-packed adventure.
Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Securing Our Future

In 2012, our 21th year as a nonprofit, we were able to re-open our historic building to the public with a warm welcome from neighbors, art and nonprofit groups and citizens from all over the Greater Cincinnati region.

In 2015, we hosted 48 business, social and nonprofit events, thus raising the funds necessary for our core overhead expenses while exposing our lovely building and neighborhood to over 7,500 visitors. Over 1,000 volunteer hours went into planning and maintenance. We have also provided quality community programming including two free Playhouse in the Park shows, Macy's Fine Arts Sampler weekend participation, free ArtsWave-sponsored summer workshops, classes, neighborhood parties, and we gave away over 400 free children's books to kick off summer reading.  The Columbia Tusculum Community Council and 3 East Business Association utilize our building for their monthly meetings.

While these successes are a reflection of our commitment to the mission of preserving our community's preeminent historic building while providing community programming, a key factor for our long-term success has been and will continue to be our fundraising efforts. In January 2013, we kicked off a campaign to eliminate our mortgage, thus freeing funds to support programming and capital expenses. We are pleased to have received positive community support toward this goal, but a need remains.

For twenty three years, neighbors have supported The Carnegie Center of Columbia Tusculum because the building supports neighborhood preservation, serves as an architectural anchor in a progressive neighborhood, brings awareness of our unique neighborhood due to large numbers of visitors outside of the community, and provides arts, education and family programming to the community. Your support for these same reasons is needed now more than ever. Financial support from the community will help to defray the cost of operating and maintaining this former Carnegie library in 2016.

Please consider making a tax-deductible gift this year during our Annual Fund Drive. Pledges can be  paid quarterly, if you'd prefer. For convenience, you may pay with Paypal via our website:www.thecarnegiecenter.org , click the button at the bottom of this page, or mail a check to 3738 Eastern Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45226. Donations of any amount are welcome, but if you would are considering a larger gift or wish to sponsor a program, please contact our Executive Director, Dinese Young, directly at 513-473-5745.

We welcome suggestions for community events, partnerships with local groups/artists, and volunteer assistance. Please contact us anytime at [email protected]. Thank  you!

Sincerely,

Dinese Young
