Shakespeare and a Venetian Jew
On January 29 at 7:30 in the TBC old sanctuary, Judson Scruton will present: Shakespeare's Shylock: A Venetian Jew In Queen Elizabeth's England.
Anti-semitism was a reality of life in England since the Edict of Expulsion in 1290. Elizabethan England and the cultural scene including Shakespeare's play, The Merchant of Venice, assumed many anti-Jewish stereotypes. But Shakespeare's play and his powerful character Shylock are far more complicated than these stereotypes. This presentation will explore the social/political/personal contexts for understanding Shakespeare's Shylock.
