Great news!
Bucksport Age-Friendly
Bucksport is the newest member of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities.

"We are thrilled to have Bucksport as our newest member of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities.  Our goal
is to support community efforts for aging in place
and to collaborate with communities in doing so.

We want to be a part of making Maine communities more livable for people of all ages. Bucksport has done
so much already and this is an exciting next step" said Lori Parham, AARP State Director.

The AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities helps participating communities become great places for all ages by adopting such features as safe, walkable streets; better housing and transportation options; access to key services; and opportunities for residents
 to participate in community activities.

Bucksport is the 14th Maine community participating in the program, and the 99th
in the US. The application was a cooperative effort of the town and Bucksport Bay Healthy Communities Coalition. AARP provides technical assistance and other resources to help towns age-friendly planning and implementation efforts.

The Bucksport Bay Healthy Communities Coalition and the town have cooperated on many projects related to the aging needs of citizens in Bucksport. The town has maintained a senior center since 1992, with many recreation and education programs for older adults.  Additionally, the Bucksport Town Council collaborated with the University of
Maine's Center on Aging to research model housing options, such as Gardner Commons and the Jed Prouty Inn.

The town of Bucksport is collaborating with
Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce and Bucksport Bay Healthy Communities Coalition's Senior Resource
Committee in sponsoring
the program, Show You Care, a social marketing program established to ensure Bucksport Bay area communities are walkable, accessible and safe so that all residents can fully participate in the life of the community.

Bucksport Harbors Talent Show Results

There was no lack of talent at the Bucksport Performing Arts Center (BPAC) last Friday.  Ron Nitsch, and Mary Elizabeth Nitsch, both of Baltimore, flew to Maine to join BACAS president, George Hanson, on the judges panel.

Keylee Ryder, who would go on to perform in the Summer Theater Camp Finale  on Sunday , sang a selection from Neverland. She was followed by Natalie Brennan, who sang while accompanying herself with a guitar. Hayden O'Connell, who would also go on to perform in the theater camp finale, took his seat at the piano and played a song without sheet music. Bringing a patriotic theme to the talent show was Linda Handzel, and her rendition of Proud to Be an American.Zachary Merrill performed a rollicking version of The Auctioneer's Son, and the show closed with Spencer Phillips on drums and Brandon Kelley on electric guitar, for a spirited ending to the competition.

When all the votes were tallied, the $125.00 first place prize was awarded to Zachary; the $75.00 second place prize was claimed by Spencer and Brandon; and the $50.00 third place prize went to Linda. Keylee, Natalie, and Hayden did not go home empty handed, as they each received a BACAS mug for participating in the very first "Bucksport Harbors Talent Show."

Camden National Bowls for Kids' Sake
Camden National Bank Employees Raise Close to $20,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine

Over 170 Camden National Bank employees joined efforts to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine at Bowl For Kids' Sake events across the state this year. In total, the Bank formed 43 teams and raised a combined total of close to $20,000 to support local Big Brothers Big Sisters programs and one-to-one youth mentoring in five regions - Penobscot County, the Midcoast, Kennebec and Somerset Counties, and Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin Counties.

"As a returning lead sponsor and a regular contributor to Bowl For Kids' Sake, we believe that supporting the youth in our communities is one of the most important things we can do," said Greg Dufour, president and chief executive officer of Camden National Bank in a press release. "Aside from our sponsorship, it is the local involvement and fundraising efforts of our employees that is truly overwhelming. Grassroots efforts like these highlight the impact that even one person can have in the life of a child, and we are incredibly proud of everyone who organized teams and participated in their local events."

According to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine, Bowl For Kids' Sake provides approximately 40 percent of the agency's annual operating budget. Last year, the nonprofit served 787 children through Big/Little matches in Knox, Lincoln, Waldo, Penobscot, Kennebec and Somerset Counties. With a cost of around $1,000 per year to create and professionally support each match, fundraising events like this and support from the community is integral to their continued success.
